Test Drive: 2014 Mazda3
Nov 8th 2013, 22:00

The Miata may be the legend, but the Mazda3 is the one that pays the bills.

The compact is the automaker's best-selling model and all new for 2014 with a starting price of $17,740 as a four-door sedan or $19,740 for a five-door hatchback. Both feature Mazda's gorgeous, swoopy Italianate styling with impossibly long hoods, great fuel economy, upscale cabins and an impressive level of technology for an affordable car.

The front-wheel-drive Mazda3 can be had with either a 155 hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder or a 184 hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder. They're the same engines also offered in the company's larger CX-5 and Mazda6 models. The smaller one is available with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission, while the 2.5-liter is currently auto-only, although a stick is coming next year.

I tested a five-door hatchback Mazda3 s with the 2.5-liter and automatic transmission. While five-doors with the smaller engine, designated as Mazda3 i, have an EPA rating of 40 mpg highway, the more powerful motor delivers a still respectable 37 mpg, or 38 mpg with a little help.

Top of the line Grand Touring models are fitted with aerodynamic grille shutters and a unique hybrid-like system called i-Eloop, which features a thermos-sized quick-charging supercapacitor that captures kinetic energy when you slow down then uses it run the car's electrical systems. It doesn't propel the car or enable a stop/start feature, but it does reduce the load on the alternator to save fuel.

The Mazda3 can be ordered with a long list of high tech safety features including a back up camera, parking sensors, blind spot alert, lane departure warning, radar cruise control and a low-speed collision avoidance system that scans the road ahead with a laser and can initiate autonomous braking between 3 mph and 19 mph. It won't bring the car to a full stop, but will help reduce the force of a frontal impact if you take your eyes off the road in stop and go traffic.

That's less likely to happen if the car is equipped with Mazda's new Active Driving Display, a low cost head's up system comprised of a small flip up screen on top of the dash that provides speed and navigation information. The fact that you can abbreviate it ADD is simply a coincidence, I suppose.

Top level models also get a comprehensive infotainment system that's controlled by either a tablet-style touchscreen on top of the dash or the authoritatively-named Commander knob and button cluster on the center console. Fully outfitted, it features navigation and e-mail integration that can read incoming messages aloud and is, amazingly, compatible with a Blackberry, as well as IOS and Android devices.

Gizmos aside, the Mazda3's cabin is terribly handsome, possibly the best looking one in the company's current lineup, and its latest cars are far from slouches in this department. The materials are top notch down to the carpets, and the seating position for the driver is as perfect as you'd expect from the Zoom Zoom brand. Rear legroom is average, but the cargo bay floor is so long that the Mazda3 could pass for a wagon.

Or a sports car. The Mazda3 has the sort of predictably great handling you'd expect from the brand, coupled with a comfortable ride around town  The engine doesn't have a lot of grunt out of the blocks, but it loves to rev and pulls strongly when it does. It feels very light on its wheels and has the balance of a tightrope walker at its limits. Unfortunately, the stock tires aren't particularly grippy so it's easy to reach the edge if you push it, but is a ton of fun when you're there.

The only shortcoming of this car is a higher level of wind and road noise than ideal. Its characteristic shared with the CX-5 and Mazda6, and really the only thing I would change. As with its showroom mates, the Mazda3 is, hands-down, the most interesting and engaging car in its class, and buying one an act of altruism for sports car fans.

They do need to replace that Miata next year, after all.

FedEx truck gets slammed by Mobsteel
Nov 8th 2013, 20:33

What's next, Fedoras and zoot suits instead of ball caps and shorts?

FedEx has commissioned a gangster-style delivery truck from Detroit area custom car shop Mobsteel.

Unveiled at the SEMA auto industry show in Las Vegas, the super boxy ride features Mobsteel's signature slammed look, and is about as low to the ground as you can go.

According to Autoblog, the truck is built on a custom chassis fitted with the front end of a 1981 Freightliner semi. It's powered by a 550 hp diesel engine that sends its exhaust through the vehicle's frame and power to the rear wheels via a high-performance ATS stage-three transmission.

Don't look for it the next time your doorbell rings, as it's for promotional use only, which is unfortunate.

That low step-in height would make loading cargo a snap.

Wife: Trotter was treated for aneurysm, seizures
Nov 8th 2013, 17:23

CHICAGO –  The wife of Charlie Trotter said doctors discovered the acclaimed chef had an aneurysm months before he died and that he'd been taking medicine to control seizures, his blood pressure and high cholesterol.

Trotter was declared dead Tuesday at a Chicago hospital after paramedics found him unresponsive in his home. An autopsy conducted Wednesday ruled out foul play or trauma, but the Cook County Medical Examiner's office said an exact cause of death could not be determined until toxicology tests and other tests are completed. It could take up to eight weeks.

In a statement to The Associated Press, Rochelle Trotter said the aneurysm was discovered in January and that doctors had prescribed the "proper medication."

According to a police report obtained by the AP, Trotter's family said shortly after his death that the chef had flown to Wyoming "against doctor's advice."

Rochelle Trotter disputed those suggestions, saying "medical experts" cleared him to travel and that he'd returned Monday night from his most recent trip. She also said "the autopsy indicates the travel is not connected with his death."

Trotter closed his world-renowned restaurant in 2012, saying he planned to study philosophy. But a friend of his, Larry Stone, has said that Trotter's health may have played a role in his decision to close the eatery after a quarter-century.

FOXNews.com: Discount supermarkets offer huge savings by selling expired food

Discount supermarkets offer huge savings by selling expired food
Nov 8th 2013, 13:14

Grocery bills can be more 10 percent of American's household expenses, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

But when buying items on sale or using coupons isn't enough, some shop at discount or salvage grocery stores.  What's that, you ask?

"People have eaten a can of food 40 years later and been okay."

- Emily Broad Leib, director of the Harvard Food Law and Policy Clinic

These are supermarkets that specialize in items that other chains no longer want to sell --such as dented cans, overbuys, or  items near or even past the expiration date.

While these stores aren't for everyone, they do attract price-conscious shoppers looking for deals.  And the deals can be significant.  One chain, Grocery Clearance Center, is offering deals like an eight-pack tube of Chobani Greek Yogurt for $1 and a 16oz bag of spinach for $.50.  A box of cereal that sells at most regular grocery stores for nearly $4 can cost as low as $1.

Over the years, these discount supermarkets have created legions of devoted fans who are spurred on by the thrill of the hunt.  They follow the latest deals online using the stores' Facebook pages or boast of their latest finds on sites like Yelp.

Pennsylvania resident Luke Quedenfeld was a regular at Amelia's Grocery Outlet, with outlets throughout the state.

"I mostly bought brand named cereals and condiments," he said. "It was a good place to go to save because even the non-expired food was pretty cheap."

While some shoppers look to these stores to significantly cut their food bill, there are others who get a little grossed out by the thought of buying something close or even past the expiration date.  Is this food even safe to eat?

Emily Broad Leib, director of the Harvard Food Law and Policy Clinic, says in most cases, yes.

Leib is the co-author of a recent study called "The Dating Game" that looked at what those expiration dates really mean.  The study, conducted with the National Resources Defense Council, concluded that labels that read "sell by", "use by", "best if used by", and "enjoy by" you see on containers from everything from ice cream to crackers often have nothing to do with safety.

She says that none of these terms have standard legal definitions and that most of the dates more often are guidelines between supplier and the grocer. Leib believes these dates shouldn't even be on labels and only confuse consumers. "The date doesn't matter if you leave it sitting open," she says.

An earlier NRDC study in 2012 also concluded that Americans throw away more than a quarter of the food and beverages they purchase -- about $165 billion per year.  Compared to all types of supply chain food loss (harvesting, packaging, ect.), consumer waste is the greatest, with a large part of discarded food due to "date" concerns.

Adding to the confusion for consumers is that there's no uniform product dating system. Twenty states don't require food dating at all, while other states like Massachusetts have laws requiring that all food be dated.

"We've become really divorced from our food processing," says Leib. "And we've become overly reliant on those dates but the truth is, there is no real way to make those guarantees (about freshness)," she said.

Discount supermarkets say their food is safe. Sharp Shopper Grocery Outlet, with shops in Virginia, tries to assuage consumer concerns by providing a PDF pamphlet on their website to explaining food and dating rules. Packaging codes "enable tracking of the product [and] enables the manufacturers to rotate their stock and track in the event of a recall," it says.  Grocery Clearance Center posts similar information.

But not all food found at these shops should be looked at the same way, say experts.  "I didn't buy bread there, even though it looked fresh and I certainly never bought meat," says Quedenfeld.

Andrea Grondhal, director of meat inspection with the North Dakota Department of Agriculture warns customers to adhere to dates with respect to meat and poultry.

"Customers should not purchase products that have gone beyond the expiration date because there is a scientific basis for the date written on there," she says. "If they do forgo it, they should consume or freeze as soon as possible and ensure the product is cooked thoroughly prior to consuming because there is a greater likelihood of product contamination with microbes."

Experts say the best approach to determining food freshness is good old common sense.  If it looks bad, don't buy it, and if you're wary about the sale-by-date on perishable items, don't put it in your cart.

Ultimately, it wasn't the food that made Quedenfeld stop going to Amelia's, it was the inconvenience of have to go to multiple places to do the grocery shopping.

But says Leib, it's important to get consumers the right information on food packaging so they can better trust their own judgment. She adds, with most products like dry pasta, canned tuna, and other items there just isn't a real reason to worry about spoilage.

"People have eaten a can of food 40 years later and been okay," says Leib.

2015 Chevrolet Tahoe PPV dresses to protect and serve
Nov 8th 2013, 14:35

Who doesn't love a truck in uniform?

Aside from criminals, that is.

Chevy has introduced the 2015 Tahoe PPV, the law enforcement version of its upcoming all-new SUV.

Dressed for patrol and emergency response duty, the Tahoe PPV rides on steel wheels, stops with heavy-duty brakes and is fitted with an electrical system pre-wired for police gear, which can be transferred from the previous generation Tahoe without modification.

Rear-wheel and four-wheel-drive versions are available, both powered by a 5.3-liter V8 matched to a six-speed automatic transmission calibrated for police pursuit.

The Tahoe PPV also comes standard with GM's OnStar telematics system, which can be used to disable the vehicle if it is stolen and locate it for recovery.

If any law enforcement officers find themselves in that kind of situation, they may want to use OnStar's navigation system to find the fastest way out of town, too.

5 Energy-saving DIY projects
Nov 8th 2013, 15:06

It happens every winter: As the temperature plummets, energy bills skyrocket. But you don't have to let winter get the best of you this year. By tackling a few projects around the home, you can keep your home warm without going broke. If you're looking to save money on bills this year, here are five DIY projects to finish before winter fully sets in.

Replace outdated bulbs with new energy-efficient LED bulbs

With new energy efficiency standards on light bulbs going into effect, traditional incandescent bulbs are becoming increasingly scarce on the shelves and will soon become extinct. However, many people still have these energy hogs in their homes. In the past, some consumers have steered clear of more energy efficient CFL bulbs because they don't look as good as incandescent lights. LED bulbs, however, combine the warm tones of incandescent bulbs with the energy savings of CFL bulbs. At $10 or more a bulb, the price tag on these lights is still pretty steep, but they are projected to last up to 20 years, making them good long-term investments.

Insulate hot water pipes

In many homes, the hot water pipes running from the water heater are completely uninsulated. And because these pipes often snake through cold basements and crawl spaces, they can cool down pretty fast, causing your water heater to work overtime. Fortunately, insulating these pipes is simple and affordable. Pipe insulation runs around a dollar for six feet, which means you can probably do the job for less than $20. Simply wrap the pipes in the polyethylene tubing and secure it with a bit of electrical tape. To insulate joints and bends in the pipe, cut two pieces of tubing at 45 degree angles and attach the two angled pieces together.

Seal windows and doors

Leaky windows and doors are one of the biggest causes of energy loss in a home. If the caulking around windows has become dried and cracked, it's time to strip it away with a caulk remover and reapply a new layer to seal the exterior of the frame. You'll also want to seal the window from inside the house with either foam weather stripping or a clear plastic window film, both of which can be easily removed in the spring when it's time to open the windows again. For doors, get a weather-stripping seal, which you can easily attach around the door with a few screws.

Check vents and openings

After tackling leaks coming in through windows and doors, you'll want to check for leaks inside your home. A leaky duct system in your home could be dumping valuable heated air in all the wrong places, making some rooms too hot and others too cold, while forcing you to forever fiddle with your thermostat in the hunt for the perfect temperature. Start by checking exposed ducts for any obvious holes and feel around ducts to see if warm air is escaping through small leaks. If you do have leaky ducts, use mastic or a heat-approved tape rather than duct tape, which does a poor job of adhering to heated ductwork. If ducts run through uninsulated areas of the house, such as crawl spaces and attics, you'll want to add a layer of insulation around the ductwork. While you can handle exposed ducts on your own, you'll likely have to call in a professional to insulate ducts located inside walls and ceilings, because these spaces can be tough to access and require the removal of drywall.

Replace your water heater with a tankless water heater

Tankless water heaters are becoming an increasingly popular option for those looking to save money on their monthly bills. As the name implies, a tankless heater gets rid of the traditional water tank and instead uses powerful boilers that only heat up water when you need it. Because these units can cost quite a bit more than a traditional water heater, you probably won't come out ahead if you upgrade a tank that is still in good working order. But for those looking to replace a heater that is on its last legs, a tankless water heater is an attractive alternative, particularly when you factor in the rebates for this energy efficient upgrade.

Car emergency escape kit on a keychain
Nov 8th 2013, 14:00

Don't let its festive selection of colors and tiny size fool you: The Resqme is a serious emergency escape kit that doubles as a keychain.

Designed to help drivers get themselves out of a sinking vehicle or one they find themselves stuck in following a crash, the Resqme features a cutting blade sharp enough to slice through seat belts and a spring loaded spike capable of shattering windows.

For all its might, the Resqme weighs less than two ounces and is barely larger than a car key. Some recent media accounts of tragic car entrapments came to mind as we rediscovered this small, emergency tool at the SEMA show in Las Vegas.

Available at a wide variety of outlets including hardware, convenience, auto parts, and department stores, Resqme comes in assorted colors and costs less than $10.

If you buy one, be sure it is either used as a keychain or firmly mounted where the driver can access, should the car rollover.

See our recommendations for a car emergency kit, and our guide to winter driving.

French restaurant group accused of seating good-looking patrons in best seats
Nov 7th 2013, 20:42

Are you beautiful enough for a window seat during your next meal?

A French restaurant group has been accused of seating guests according to attractiveness.

The French Le Canard Enchaîné reported that the Costes group, which owns both Le Georges and Café Marly in Paris, has a policy where the beautiful people are upgraded to the best tables.

The investigative and satirical weekly cited two former employees. "The good-looking ones are led to the good places, where they can be easily seen." Failure to comply, they said, resulted in reprimands such as: "What are these ugly mugs doing at this table? Everyone can see them when they come in. It's very bad for our image."

The employees also said that only women with "a model's physique" would be considered for a job as a hostess.

A member of the Georges restaurant told Le Canard that they "did not deny" the policy existed, saying that  "It's a little complicated to answer."

A spokesman for the Costes brothers told the Telegraph: "They have no comment."

Family leaves publishing to make 'Wine of the Year'
Nov 7th 2013, 14:36

Doug Shafer was 17 when his father John, who worked in the publishing industry, decided to change careers and try his hand at winemaking. And even though he had absolutely no experience in the wine world, John packed up his family and moved them from Chicago to Napa.

That was 1975. Today, I had the honor of meeting Doug, now president of Shafer Vineyards, here in New York City. Doug and his young family were in town to accept the Wine Spectator 2012 Wine of the Year award for their 2008 Relentless, which is 75 percent Syrah and 25 percent Petite Sirah.

Seems his father's gamble worked out okay.

These days, the Shafer family owns and cultivates about 200 acres of vineyards that are sources for Shafer's Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, and Syrah.

And Shafer, the new face of the vineyard, has become somewhat of a celebrity in the wine world though wasn't particularly comfortable with me saying that.  "I'm a farmer," he said. "I just wanna make great wine."

He is as "chill" as they come and, obviously, quite humble.  But his story is inspiring, enough to put pen to paper and write a book. Worth the read: A Vineyard in Napa.

Shafer is taking the production of great wine to the next level. Since the late 1980s, he has been using sustainable farming practices to cultivate his fruit. And in 2004 Shafer became the first winery in the U.S. to convert to 100 percent solar power.

"We have a lot of sun out there," he jokes. "Might as well use it."

So unfortunately the winning 2008 Relentless is sold out but the 2010 still is available and fabulous and for around $70, quite a steal for a winning wine (The 2011 Red Shoulder Ranch Chardonnay is amazing too, if I can through my two cents in.).

Of grab another wine off the 2012 Wine Spectator winners' list and let me know what you think.

Icon TR Series is a Chevy Thriftmaster for the wealthy
Nov 7th 2013, 18:43

You'll have to be thrifty to afford one of these, but any classic truck lover should appreciate it.

The latest creation from California boutique automaker Icon is the TR Series, a retro-modern take on the 1947-1953 Chevy 3100 pickup, the earliest versions of which were known as the Thriftmaster.

This new one uses fully-licensed reproduction steel bodywork mounted onto a custom Art Morrison chassis with rack and pinion steering, independent front suspension, a 9-inch rear axle and JRE coilover shocks.

Under the hood is a Chevrolet E-Rod 5.3-liter fuel-injected V8 crate engine that's rated at 315 hp, but can also be fitted with a Magnusen supercharger that bumps it up to 435 hp. Both six-speed automatic or manual transmission are available to go with it.

The interior has a decidedly traditional look, but features the latest electronic equipment underneath, including Dakota Digital gauges, Kenwood navigation and audio, Bluetooth and WiFi. The seats and steering wheel are upholstered in bison leather, while the carpets come from the same supplier that Rolls-Royce uses.

The American ash and stainless steel bed floor may not encourage any heavy hauling, but they probably won't have you ordering any spray-on bedliner, either.

Of course, while you can pick up an original Thriftmaster in nice shape for about $15,000, this 21st Century version is going to cost a fair bit more than that. Prices start at $230,000, and Icon will only be building about five of them a year.

Start saving now.

FOXNews.com: Most booster seats do well in new safety rankings

Most booster seats do well in new safety rankings
Nov 7th 2013, 19:24

More than half of child booster seats that went on sale this year earned a top rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

The institute, which is funded by insurers, ranked 31 new models. Nineteen earned the top rating of "best bet," which means they correctly position a 4- to 8-year-old child to use the regular shoulder and lap belts in almost any car.

Britax, Evenflo, Ferrari, Graco, Harmony, Recaro and Safety 1st all had seats on the institute's "best bet" list. Both booster seats with high backs and those without backs performed well.

One seat — the Ferrari Beline SP — got a "good bet" rating when used in its high-back mode. That means the fit is acceptable in most vehicles. Eleven seats got a "check fit" rating, which means the seats may provide a good fit in some vehicles but parents should make sure.

A belt fits correctly when the lap portion lies flat across the child's upper thighs and the shoulder portion crosses snugly over the middle of the shoulder. The institute said children in booster seats are much more likely to escape serious injury in a crash than those without boosters. Children should use boosters until they're big enough for adult belts to fit properly.

The cheapest "best bet" was the Graco Connext backless seat, which costs $18. The most expensive, the Ferrari Beline SP, which has both high-back and backless modes, is $300.

The institute said seats have made big improvements since it began testing them five years ago. In all, there are 58 seats ranked on its website, including seats that weren't new in 2013. The group tested the boosters based on how they positioned a child-sized test dummy to use a car's seat belts.

There are only two booster seats the institute warns people not to buy: The Safety 1st All-In-One and Safety 1st Alpha Omega Elite. Both are made by Dorel Juvenile Group, which has several other seats on the "best bet" list.

The institute said the seats — which can be used in rear-facing mode for infants as well as forward-facing mode for young children — aren't recommended because the lap belt comes up too far on the abdomen and the shoulder belt is too far out on the shoulder.

Dorel Juvenile Group said in a statement that the seats comply with all federal safety requirements and are recommended by the institute in some of their other modes.

Bakery creates a turkey doughnut for Thanksgivukkah
Nov 7th 2013, 17:28

We've seen all kinds of weird and wacky doughnut combinations these days, but this caught our eye.

A Manhattan baker is about to release to the public a doughnut filled with all the fixings of Thanksgiving dinner: turkey, cranberry sauce, and you guessed it, gravy, stuffed inside a deep-fried doughnut.

Zucker Bakery's unique twist on a sufganiyah, a traditional Hanukkah doughnut – usually filled with jelly or custard – is in honor of Thanksgivukkah.  What's that you ask?  Well, this year, the first day of Hanukkah will fall on the same day as Thanksgiving: Nov. 28.  So the Thanksgiving-themed sufganiyah is their way to roll two holidays into one bite.

They offer four kinds (in case the turkey is too much or you): Spiced pumpkin with cranberry and turkey filling, sweet potato with toasted marshmallow filling, spiced pumpkin with turkey and gravy filling, and spiced pumpkin with cranberry filling.   They go on sale for between $3.50 and $5 on Saturday, Nov. 9, but you can get a sampling on Friday.

So tell us, ready to try a turkey doughnut?

SEMA 2013: LED headlights update older cars
Nov 7th 2013, 13:00

Light emitting diode, or LED, headlights are all the rage at Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show in Las Vegas this year, as several major manufacturers have stepped up with products to retrofit older cars with the latest headlight technology.

Increasingly common on new vehicles, headlight makers tout LEDs for their brighter light and long life, said to be as much as 10 years or more. The downside is, LEDs aren't cheap, easily adding hundreds to the cost of a new car. (See our evaluation of headlamp restoration kits.)

General Electric, Philips, and Sylvania all showed new sealed-beam replacement LED headlights at SEMA. All are targeting owners of older models and collector cars, since sealed beams disappeared from most new-model cars years ago.

All three manufacturers offer standard 7-inch units; GE and Philips also make 5x7-inch rectangular styles. GE claims a life expectancy of 15,000 hours for their Nighthawk LED lamps, while Philips simply says to expect their LED headlights to last 50 times longer than conventional halogen lights.

Sylvania's Zevo line includes interior and exterior LED accent lighting kits, daytime running lights, and fog lights, in addition to headlights. The Interior Base Kit starts at $35. But if you're looking for a set of LED headlights from any of the three manufacturers, expect to pay in the neighborhood of $500 for a pair.

The new LED products are arriving in stores now, with wide availability expected in early 2014. Our tests of new models with LED lights have shown they do produce a brighter light than Halogen bulbs, but don't necessarily help you see any further down the road.

Third fire in Tesla Model S reported
Nov 7th 2013, 17:12

Another Tesla Model S electric car has caught fire, this time after hitting road debris outside of Smyrna, Tennessee.

The blaze on Wednesday afternoon engulfed the front of the car. A spokeswoman for the Tennessee Highway Patrol says the Model S was headed east on Interstate 24 when it ran over a tow hitch. The hitch hit the undercarriage of the car, causing an electrical fire.

It's the third fire in a Model S in the past five weeks and similar to one in early October just outside of Seattle. In that fire, a driver hit road debris that pierced a shield and the battery pack, causing a fire. The other blaze happened in Mexico after the driver ran over a roundabout and crashed into a concrete wall and a tree at a high speed.

The Model S, which starts at $70,000, can go up to 265 miles on a single charge.

In the Tennessee case, the driver was able to pull onto an emergency lane. No one was hurt.

Tesla says the fire was not spontaneous. Spokeswoman Liz Jarvis Shean says Tesla has sent a team to Tennessee to investigate the fire. She says the company has been in contact with the driver, who believes the car saved his life.

The fire burned the front of the car, according to pictures posted on the Jalopnik.com and Valuewalk.com websites.

Shares of the carmaker, based in Palo Alto, Calif., fell 7 percent Thursday morning to $140.63.

The high-flying stock had risen in value by more than 400 percent earlier in the year, but fell this week after some analysts found its third-quarter earnings disappointing. Concerns about a battery shortage, as well as the costs Tesla will incur as it builds more cars, spooked some investors.

FOXNews.com: Fans make a run for Heady Topper beer as retail outlet is shuttered

Fans make a run for Heady Topper beer as retail outlet is shuttered
Nov 6th 2013, 21:45

A popular Vermont beer is in such high demand that its makers are shuttering their retail operation to head off the trouble brewing with its neighbors.

Customers lined up at The Alchemist brewery on Tuesday to buy cases of Heady Topper, the double IPA that Beer Advocate magazine recently ranked No. 1 out of the top 250 beers in the world.

The hoppy concoction is so popular — sales have grown from 30 barrels a week to 180 a week in the two years since the brewery opened on the outskirts of Waterbury — that owners Jen and John Kimmich plan to close their retail operation on November 15 to appease nearby residents.

"We've had complaints from neighbors," Jen Kimmich said. "We would have had to fight to keep on going. ... We decided to close down before it turns into a large legal battle."

The couple plan to reopen the retail outlet as soon as possible and is looking for other locations in Waterbury, Kimmich said. While the retail end is closing for now, the brewery will continue operating and keep its staff of 25, she said.

Heady Topper's reputation exceeds its production levels. The brewery sells 180 barrels a week compared with the 30 it sold about two years ago — but either way, it's a drop in the bucket compared with the 200 million barrels of beer produced in the U.S. each year.

While grieving customers crashed the Heady Topper website Tuesday afternoon, it drew a big sigh of relief from Amy Kinsell, who owns the house next door to the brewery.

"The busier they've gotten, the more chaotic my life has gotten," she said on her front porch. She said other neighbors had complained as well.

Beer lovers can be more boisterous than considerate at times. The driveway at the Kimmichs' business is easy to miss, and Kinsell said there was one half-hour period last summer when 26 people turned around in her driveway.

When she parked a vehicle across the entrance to her driveway to slow that traffic down, people turned around on her grass, she said. Then there were the smoke and odors from the brewery's operations, and noise from the refrigerated trucks in its backyard.

There was no drowning her sorrows in her neighbor's product, Kinsell said.

"I'm not a beer drinker, not a fan of any beer."

The Alchemist has become a jewel in the frothy crown of Vermont microbreweries that had spawned a new sort of beer tourism, in which connoisseurs from around the world come to sample prize-winning brews of Lawson's Finest Liquids in Waitsfield, the Shed in Stowe, Hill Farmstead in Greensboro and others.

The notion of even a temporary closure disappointed fans stopping by the shop Tuesday.

"It's a sad situation, it really is," said Andy McLenithan, of Manchester in southern Vermont, who with his co-worker Scott Senecal had driven an hour out of his way on a trip home from building a baseball diamond in St. Johnsbury to stop at the Waterbury brewery.

FOXNews.com: Bride makes gruesome severed head wedding cake

Bride makes gruesome severed head wedding cake
Nov 6th 2013, 20:34

How's this for a great start to a marriage.

A cake maker designed her own wedding cake that she sculpted to look like her and her husband's severed heads.  The decapitated heads, lying on their sides, had blank soulless eyes and were sitting in a pool of blood.  Below the heads was the phrase, "Till Death Do Us Part."

Natalie Sideserf, 28, owner of Sideserf Cake Studio said she spent about 40 hours creating the killer treat for her and husband Dave's movie-themed Austin, Tex. wedding.

"I was heavily influenced by the Halloween season, my husband's love for horror movies, and the venue which was the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema," she told FoxNews.com in and email. "While we do a vast array of different cake designs for our customers, hyperrealism has been one of my favorite subjects so the thought of doing our severed heads was a no-brainer (no pun intended)."

Inside was confetti vanilla cake that showed its multi-colors when cut into.  It was topped with vanilla buttercream frosting and modeling chocolate –lots of it.

This isn't the only cake Sideserf has made that's captured national headlines.

Earlier this year she made a cake in the eerie likeness of singer Willie Nelson.  A picture of that cake, posted on Reddit, went viral on social media and won her several baking awards.  She later made a cake of comedians Jim Gaffigan, Chelsea Peretti, Dana Carvey, and Bill Hader styled after Mount Rushmore for Austin's Moontower Comedy Festival.

As far as Sideserf's own wedding cake is concerned, she said that her guests were shocked when it was brought out but ultimately her creation was a big hit with everyone --expect her grandmother.

FOXNews.com: This drink, for $176, comes with a ride in a sports car

This drink, for $176, comes with a ride in a sports car
Nov 6th 2013, 19:05

We all know that drink prices are on the rise, although we don't think it's always justified. But this drink, with an eye-popping price tag of $176, just may be worth it.

Gothamist reports that the bar at New York City's Langham Place hotel has a drink called the Quattroporte (yes, like the Maserati).  It's made the Italian aperitif Aperol, the digestive Amaro Nonino, Plymouth Gin and some pricey Krug Champagne.  After gulping down the drink, you can request that the hotel staff take you on a spin around Manhattan in an actual Maserati Quattroporte.

The car is capable of going 176 mph, which is how the hotel came up with the price point, but don't expect the driver to go full throttle on Fifth Avenue.

The cocktail must be ordered one day in advance, and it's only available in November, so you better hurry.

Nebraska man's stolen motorcycle found after 46 years
Nov 6th 2013, 19:45

OMAHA, Neb. –  Donald DeVault wonders what kind of memories his Triumph motorcycle helped make in the 46 years since it was stolen.

The 73-year-old Omaha man learned last week that California authorities had recovered his 1953 Triumph Tiger 100 at the Port of Los Angeles. The bike was about to be shipped to Japan when customs agents who checked the vehicle identification number discovered it had been reported stolen in February 1967.

DeVault says he's talked about the motorcycle over the years. He recalls Marlon Brando riding a similar bike in the movie "The Wild One."

Once he gets it back, DeVault plans to have someone restore the bike's name and paint "46 Years Later" on the gas tank.

The bike was valued at $300 in 1967. Today, it's worth about $9,000.

Dodge brings back 'Shaker' hood on Challenger muscle car
Nov 6th 2013, 19:53

Now about those Holley carbs.

Dodge is bringing back the legendary "Shaker" hood on the 2014 Challenger.

Just like the old days, the engine-mounted cold air intake scoop pokes through a hole in the hood and vibrates along with the 5.7-liter Hemi V8 it's matched to.

Available on the new Challenger R/T Shaker model, the scoop comes matched to the Super Track Pack, which includes a retuned suspension and steering, more potent brakes and high performance tires. A matte-black hood, unique trim and Shaker logos all over the car further differentiate it from other Challengers.

Along with the standard production model, Dodge is also offering 100 Shaker hood Challengers modified by Mopar for 2014 that are equipped with a slew of functional and cosmetic accessories from the Mopar catalog.

The Challenger R/T Shaker goes on sale early next year for $36,995 with the Mopar 2014 Challenger following in the spring at a yet to be announced price.
