Former Tamarack suitor gets 17 years in prison
Jul 31st 2013, 21:12

BOISE, Idaho –  The man who once tried to buy Idaho's cash-strapped Tamarack Resort was ordered Wednesday to immediately begin serving 17 years in prison for raiding pension funds to help finance the deal.

Matthew Hutcheson, a former trustee who oversaw pension funds for small businesses, was convicted in April on 17 counts of wire fraud as part of a scheme to steal $5 million from pension funds to enrich himself, purchase luxury cars and buy Tamarack, a struggling ski resort 90 miles north of Boise.

During Wednesday's three-hour sentencing hearing, U.S. District Judge W. Fremming Nielsen rejected Hutcheson's request to be allowed to turn himself in to prison later, concluding that letting him remain free for even a short time longer could prompt the 41-year-old father of four to "do something that would not be wise."

"You're too smart, you're too devious. You're going to have to serve your time, you might as well start now," Nielsen said, after berating Hutcheson for violating the trust of hundreds of retirement investors whose money he once oversaw. "You were deceitful to them, you ignored them. You gave misinformation ... As a trustee, you blew it."

Stripped of his necktie and tan suit jacket as the hearing concluded, Hutcheson was led away in handcuffs by court bailiffs.

Prosecutors say Hutcheson stole more than $2 million from one pension fund he oversaw, using that money to buy luxury cars for himself and family members as well as to pay personal debts and remodel his home in Eagle, a community west of Boise. They also say he took $3.3 million from another pension fund, using it to buy the mortgage to Tamarack's golf course that he eventually hoped to leverage to gain control of the entire resort.

The plan ultimately failed.

In the process, however, more than 250 people lost money they had been counting on for their retirement, including Judy Thompson, a Yakima, Wash., woman who said the theft of $950,000 from her family's accounts made them Hutcheson's single-biggest victim.

She testified Wednesday that money she'd hoped to use to buy a swimming pool and help pay for her grandkids' college had simply vanished.

"He stole from our retirement dreams," said Thompson, who first met Hutcheson in 1993 when he began doing work with the retirement account of her family's audiology business. "Our lives would be so different if that meeting had never taken place."

It's unclear if the investors will recoup any of their lost money.

The U.S. Department of Labor, whose investigators gathered information against Hutcheson after investors complained about their missing money starting in 2011, said Hutcheson sought to live a life of luxury at the expense of hard-working people.

"The defendant's despicable conduct jeopardized the financial security of workers," said Assistant Secretary of Labor for Employee Benefits Security Phyllis C. Borzi, in a statement.

Hutcheson spoke for about a half hour, telling Nielsen he was "horrified" people like Judy Thompson and other investors believed he had absconded with their money. Though he conceded he may have made "judgment errors," he insisted he was capable of recouping investors' losses — and suggested court-ordered no-contact provisions had prevented him from meeting with victims, to explain to them how he could still recover their cash.

Sending him to prison, he told the judge, could actually impede those efforts.

Nielsen discounted Hutcheson's claims, however, saying he agreed with prosecutors: In addition to forging signatures and doctoring financial statements to make himself seem much wealthier than he really was, Hutcheson also likely falsified documents in December 2012 to make it seem like investors had valuable assets in their accounts that could eventually be liquidated.

It "doesn't pass the smell test," Nielsen told Hutcheson, before rejecting a request by his lawyer, Nampa defender Ryan P. Henson, to require a prison term of just six years.

Several members of Hutcheson's family were in the court gallery, including his wife, Annette Hutcheson, his father-in-law, Brad Mason, and his father. In a brief interview, Annette Hutcheson said she disagreed with the process and said it was an injustice.

Cronut t-shirt benefits charity, doubles number of Cronuts patrons can purchase
Jul 31st 2013, 15:23

Finally, there may be a meaningful outcome from the massive Cronut lines outside Dominique Ansel Bakery in New York City.

Since introducing the Cronut in May, the bakery has experienced a nationwide frenzy for the cross-bred pastry made from croissant dough and fried like a doughnut.

Even now, months later, the daily average for the line in front of Dominique Ansel Bakery is around 200 people.

But now Chef Dominique Ansel has decided to capitalize on that Cronut obsession to benefit New Yorkers in need. Starting Aug. 1, the bakery will be selling a limited edition t-shirt, which will benefit a charity for the hungry. But there is an added bonus. The bakery will also allow customers to double the number of Cronuts they can buy, increasing the limit from two to four.

The shirt, which will be available through Tee Springs' website, comes in only black and reads "Crolanthropy – Making the world better, one Cronut at a time." The shirt will be on sale for two weeks. Then, for the month of Sept., customers who wear the shirt to Dominique Ansel Bakery will be able to purchase four Cronuts at a time.

All proceeds from the sale of the shirts will benefit Food Bank for New York City

At $20 per shirt, the proceeds from one shirt will provide 50 meals to a New Yorker in need. Citywide, the charity helps provide 400,000 free meals a day to New York's hungry.

"Hunger is a problem I have experienced myself growing up," Ansel said in a release. "Not many people know, but I grew up in a very poor family with three other siblings…I'm not sure how much money we'll be able to generate. Keep in mind we are a small one shop bakery. But I do think any bit we do get will be a success and a step forward."

The initiative comes during Food Bank's national hunger awareness month in Sept. While there is no precise goal for the amount of funding the bakery hopes to generate from the sale, Tee Springs' website states that they hope to sell a minimum of 200 shirts, which would be $4,000 in charitable donation.

"Having a mission to give back to the community and different causes is a lifestyle," Ansel said. "You don't often get to choose when to help, but when the opportunity comes, it's always good to try."

FOXNews.com: Introducing the ELF, a battery-powered car-bicycle hybrid

Introducing the ELF, a battery-powered car-bicycle hybrid
Jul 31st 2013, 16:40

Mark Stewart turns quite a few heads as he zips through the streets on his neon green ELF bike. With each pedal, his feet take turns sticking out from the bottom while a gentle motor hums in the background.

What he's driving looks like a cross between a bicycle and a car, the closest thing yet to Fred Flintstone's footmobile, only with solar panels and a futuristic shape.

It's a "green" option for today's commuters.

Stewart, a 65-year-old family therapist and school psychologist from Cambridge, Mass., took the summer off in order to drive his new ELF bike more than 1,200 miles on trails and roads using the East Coast Greenway, a bike and pedestrian trail that runs from Canada to Key West.

He began his journey by flying down to Durham, N.C., on July 15, and estimates that the entire trip will take about a month. He covered the first leg, from Durham, N.C. to Reston, Va., over roughly five days, 60 miles at a time.

Needless to say, he's getting lots of questions along the way.

"It reminds me of when I saw a Smart car the first time," said Joanne Bury as she emerged from her Reston condominium building to take a look at the vehicle. "This is incredible. What is it?"

Such attention, Stewart says, is par for the course.

"I don't mind though. I mean I like that people want to talk about it," he said.

The ELF, or "Organic Transit Vehicle," can go for 1,800 miles on the energy equivalent of a gallon of gasoline. It does not require the insurance, repair and car maintenance costs of the average vehicle. Besides the cost of the occasional new tire, the ELF runs completely off what it costs to charge its battery.

Stewart bought the ELF from Durham-based Organic Transit, which sells them for a base price of $5,000. He said he wanted to avoid the almost $1,000 delivery charge, so he decided to fly down to pick up the bike in person and learn how to operate it before taking the long trip back home.

"I spent three days in the shop hanging with the guys there and learning the vehicle," Stewart said. "This is just an unsupported solo trip up here in a vehicle that nobody else really knows."

Stewart's ELF is only about the 40th to come off the production line. While few bike shop workers have seen the contraption, the materials, such as the tires and pedals, are items on your average bicycle.

Organic Transit CEO Rob Cotter took technology from aircrafts, boats and bicycles and incorporated them into a "green" 130-pound vehicle.

"About 30 years ago I was working in the performance car industry working on Porsches and BMWs," Cotter said. "At the time the world record for a streamline bicycle was 55 mph by ground and I realize that those efficiencies are capable with one horsepower. I realized from a social, ethical and environmental standpoint that we're doing something drastically wrong."

He was consulting on bike-sharing technologies being considered for New York City's proposed program when he saw there was a market for his vehicle.

"A combination of environmental catastrophes, high fuel costs, climate change and a migration of people moving to the cities all combined for a trend of people looking for an automotive alternative. But not everyone can fit a bicycle into their daily life," Cotter said.

"Issues like weather, steep hills, lack of carrying capacity, falling over and safety concerns steer many away from bicycles. The ELF was designed to address those concerns, contribute to the rider's health, cost savings and lessen their environmental impact," he said.

Demand has grown significantly, and Organic Transit has opened a second factory. The company is working on their 75th bike, with more than 200 already sold or reserved with a deposit.

"Right now we make them at a rate of one per day hand built in the U.S. but we're about to open up another facility on the West Coast to increase our efficiency sometime this year to get up to four per day," Cotter said.

While the ELF is classified as a bicycle by Organic Transit, the laws surrounding such a vehicle vary.

In the District of Columbia, where Stewart's GPS was taking him, the ELF is not allowed on the bike trails and paths. The city classifies it as a motorized bicycle.

"They can't operate the unit on a sidewalk, they can't park on a street and they can't operate on off-street bike trails or bike routes," said Monica Hernandez of the city's Department of Transportation. "The only thing you can do (on the street) is stop to unload or load the unit."

Stewart says so far he's only gotten looks of curiosity.

"A lot of cops have gone by me no one's said boo. They'll look, they're interested but they don't question its right to be on the road," Stewart said.

FOXNews.com: CNG-compatible Ford F-150 on sale in 2014

CNG-compatible Ford F-150 on sale in 2014
Jul 31st 2013, 11:30

After finding success with the technology across its commercial truck lineup, Ford will be introducing a natural gas prep kit for the 2014 F-150 pickup, making it the only half-ton pickup available so equipped.

The $315 option will be available for the 3.7-liter V6, and can be ordered with any F-150 configuration offered with that engine.

The kit includes specially engineered valves, valve seats, pistons and rings that allow the motor to operate on either compressed natural gas (CNG), liquid petroleum gas (LPG) or gasoline.

After purchase, customers will need to have a CNG/LPG system installed by one of Ford's approved qualified vehicle modifiers, which typically costs from $7,500-$9,500. Chevrolet and Ram both offer CNG-equipped heavy duty pickups from the factory for about $11,000 over the standard models.

The appeal of natural gas is its largely domestic production and low price compared to gasoline. The national average is just over $2.00 per gallon equivalent and it can be had for less than $1.00 in some states, including Oklahoma.

Dedicated CNG/LPG systems are available, but Ford Truck's Product Development Sustainability Product Manager, Dick Cupka, says customers for the company's current vehicles largely go for bi-fuel upfits that allow the trucks to run on either natural gas or gasoline, adding flexibility in their operation.

The kits are currently available in Ford's Transit connect and E-Series vans, along with its heavy duty pickups and chassis cabs. Cupka says it expects to sell over 15,000 trucks with the prep kit this year.

But while commercial customers have accounted for the bulk of sales of these types of vehicles so far, given the popularity of the F-150 and increasing interest in natural gas as a motor fuel, Cubka thinks this latest application could make the crossover to more private retail buyers.

The lack of a refueling infrastructure remains the greatest hurdle to the wide adoption of these alternative fuels, but fleets often set up their own pumps at a central location and home fueling systems are available for houses already heated by natural gas.

Production of F-150s fitted with the prep kit begins in November, but Ford will start taking orders for them in August when the books open on the 2014 models.

FOXNews.com: Denver hotel offers $50G stay in inflatable pop-up room

Denver hotel offers $50G stay in inflatable pop-up room
Jul 31st 2013, 07:46

DENVER –  For a limited time, a Denver hotel is offering a package with a one-night stay in a pop-up, inflatable room that rises 22 feet in the air, thanks to a scissor lift on top of the van on which it sits.

The cost: $50,000.

There is a weight limit. No smoking is allowed.

Architect Alex Schweder created the 5-foot-by-7-foot, see-through room atop a van for the Biennial of the Americas festival of arts, culture and ideas in Denver. It has a chemical toilet, shower, sink, inflatable bed and couch, and curtains. It is being driven to parking lots around town through Aug. 23.

"It's a very small room but a very special room," Schweder said. "You're always on the top floor."

Now the Curtis hotel, which sponsored the piece, is offering the curious a chance to stay in the aluminum and inflated vinyl structure called "the hotel rehearsal."

Much of Schweder's work centers on the performance of architecture, focusing not so much on a structure but the actions within it. After Schweder learned developers want to turn several Denver parking lots into hotels, he created "the hotel rehearsal" as a foreshadowing of how the space could change. One early draft involved suspending the room from a crane. Schweder was encouraged to keep it more grounded.

For $50,000, a guest would get one weekend night in the puffy space, plus lots of extras including a diamond pendant and earrings, two iPod Nanos and a dance party for 100 people in a ballroom of the Curtis. The inflatable room holds 450 pounds. No alcohol is allowed inside, in hopes of discouraging people from using it as a bouncy castle.

At least one person has inquired about the room, said Kate Thompson, sales director at the Curtis. Schweder said much of the $50,000 will go toward insurance, but customers also will be supporting the future of the Biennial of the Americas.

Schweder, who is based in New York and the United Kingdom, spent two nights in the room. While it has curtains, Schweder left the roof uncovered during his stay so he could peer up at the sky.

After one night, he tweaked the design to mitigate sound from the fans that bring in fresh air and keep the room inflated.

Schweder tells potential guests, "The thing you shouldn't forget in your suitcase is your imagination."

FOXNews.com: Volkswagen stops academics from revealing car hack

Volkswagen stops academics from revealing car hack
Jul 30th 2013, 19:56

A British university is delaying the release of an academic paper on how the anti-theft systems of millions of Volkswagen vehicles are at risk of being hacked after the German carmaker took legal action against it.

In a statement, the University of Birmingham said it would "defer publication" of the paper — which explains how researchers were able to subvert Volkswagen's security system — after an interim injunction issued by England's High Court. It said it was "disappointed with the judgment which did not uphold the defense of academic freedom and public interest, but respects the decision."

The university did not elaborate on how long the paper would be held, saying it was still getting legal advice.

The paper — which a group of academics including Birmingham's Flavio Garcia had planned to publish next month — revealed three ways to bypass a brand of computer chip used by several auto manufacturers to fight vehicle theft.

Often referred to as immobilizers, such chips use a secret algorithm to ensure that a car can only be started with the right key, and they've been a mandatory in all new vehicles sold in Britain over the past 15 years.

Crucially, the researchers planned to reveal how they were able to reverse-engineer the algorithm — and publish a copy of it in their paper.

Volkswagen said that publishing the formula would be "highly damaging" and "facilitate theft of cars," according to a ruling handed down last month by High Court Justice Colin Birss. The judge said that millions of Volkswagen vehicles were issued with the chip, including high-end cars such as Porsches, Audis, Bentleys, and Lamborghinis.

The researchers countered that Volkswagen's claim that the paper would be a boon to car thieves was overblown, that they had warned the chip's manufacturer about the vulnerability six months ago, and that a gag order would interfere with their legitimate academic work.

Birss said he sympathized with the researchers' rights, but that he had to weigh them against public safety.

"I recognize the high value of academic free speech, but there is another high value, the security of millions of Volkswagen cars," he said.

It's not yet clear if the case will go to trial. The University of Birmingham declined further comment Tuesday. Volkswagen also declined comment, citing ongoing proceedings.

KFC offers free chicken picnic for huge chicken bucket tenants
Jul 30th 2013, 15:33

You may have heard about that Georgia family who walked out of their house to find a gigantic Kentucky Fried Chicken bucket sitting on their front lawn.

Now, the family is in for another surprise.  KFC is offering the family a free fried chicken picnic to go with that bucket.

"KFC has offered to cater a picnic for Ms. Headrick, her family and friends to celebrate the coolest lawn art in Waynesboro. It would be fun to enjoy a KFC meal in the shadow of a giant KFC bucket," KFC spokesman Rick Maynard told FoxNews.com.

Georgia resident Aleena Headrick discovered the 7-foot-tall bucket, which mysteriously appeared on her property last Thursday, according to Fox's KTVI.  Ultimately, it was revealed that her landlord, who collects signs, put the bucket there without telling her.

The bucket, with the Kentucky Fried Chicken logo --as opposed to simply KFC -- is about 30 to 40 years old and is a collectors item. The landlord says the giant bucket will stay on the property, which Headrick says is fine by her.  Already it has become a tourist attraction, with people stopping to take pictures with it.

Maynard said Headrick hasn't yet accepted KFC's offer, but expects that she will.

"After all, the only thing better than a KFC picnic is a free KFC picnic," said Maynard. "They already have the bucket, so we think they deserve the chicken to go with it."

FOXNews.com: Cronut craze spreads overseas

Cronut craze spreads overseas
Jul 30th 2013, 14:00

The seemingly endless and inexplicable desire for cronuts--the hybrid croissant and doughnut pastry created New York City chef Dominique Ansel --has reportedly spread overseas, with some pastry chefs going to extreme measures to reverse engineer the treat.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Philippines chef Ana Lorenzana-De Ocampo of Wildflour Cafe + Bakery had her brother wait in line for two hours to get cronuts and had one flown over to Manila from New York so she could get a closer look.  De Ocampo ultimately reverse-engineered the pastry and now sells her own version under the generically named croissant doughnuts, to avoid any trademark infringement.

"We tested a few croissant-dough recipes, changing up the butter-to-dough ratio, and formed it into a doughnut shape,"  she told the Journal, adding it took her about five attempts at making her own before perfecting it.

Yoshinori Shimizu, spokesman for Japanese bakery, Banderole, said it took two months to make the chain's version ready for prime time. "We were pretty much perfecting the process until the very last minute when we launched it on July 1st," he told the Journal.

Renditions of the crounut have popped in Hong Kong, Singapore, Bejing and as far away as Australia and Canada.  In each location, chefs put their local spin on it, stuffing them with flavors that suit local palates, such as green-tea, caramel or custard.

Whether the crounut is a passing fad or has legs is still to be seen.  The lines for the sought-after treat continue to snake around the block in Soho's trendy neighborhood, where early birds have to arrive at 5.30 with the hope they can get a taste.

Mercedes-Benz integrating Google Glass into its cars
Jul 30th 2013, 11:31

Google Glass may be the must have accessory for nerds of the moment, but it could play the same role for luxury car owners soon.

The Silicon Valley Business Journal reports that Mercedes-Benz is working to integrate the wearable computer with its in-car infotainment systems.

The primary goal, according to the report, is to create a navigation system that seamlessly moves with the wearer from inside to outside the car.

The idea is that you enter a destination when you leave home which then automatically transfers to the car's built in system as you drive and back to the Glass when you get out of the car, allowing for walking directions to your final destination.

Glass currently offers navigation when tethered to a smartphone, but using it requires that you wear the device the entire time.

The Mercedes-Benz still a few years away from the real world, as Google Glass itself is still under development and not even generally available to consumers yet, but Mercedes Benz is clearly aiming to be ready if it catches on with its customers.

In the meantime, to prove its agnosticism when it comes to technology, the automaker is also working on a suite of applications that work with Apple's Siri voice command system, because there's no telling what those successful nerds of the future will be into.

Fake restaurant on TripAdvisor sends diners to alley filled with garbage cans
Jul 29th 2013, 19:53

Fake reviews of a restaurant named Oscar's, billed as having "Michelin-starred food," reportedly had diners looking for the eatery in an alley filled with garbage cans.

The U.K.s Telegraph reports that the restaurant, listed on the TripAdvisor website as a floating restaurant built in the hull of an old fishing boat located in England's coastal town Brixham in Devon.  Diner reviews praised it for its "mind-blowing," "simply divine" "perfect" and "amazing" food that "bordered on sorcery." Some reviews even suggesting it ought to be awarded a Michelin star.

But in actual fact, the restaurant was didn't exist and hungry travelers were sent on a wild goose chase looking for the place in the town's alleyway.

According to the Telegraph, Oscar's reportedly first appeared on TripAdvisor in May, climbed 29th place in a ratings list of 64 eateries in the area.

A disgruntled businessman, who uses the name Oscar Parrot, is reportedly behind the hoax, saying he did it because he was fed up with TripAdvisor and its inability to sufficiently police the site and to prevent people from posting malicious reviews.  Parrot, who admitted he posted all the reviews and even provided an email address for them, said his friend's hotel got a list of bad reviews on the site that he suspected was from a rival hotelier.  The restaurant and its reviews have now been removed.

"The listing featured over-the-top reviews for a fake business, but it went undetected for more than two months," Chris Emmins, co-founder of the online reputation management firm KwikChex, told the Telegraph. "It's difficult to see how TripAdvisor's system can detect elaborate fraud, if they can't detect one like this."

But in a statement to FoxNews.com, TripAdvisor said it was committed to ensuring that the content on the site remains accurate and provides a trusted and useful source of information for those planning a trip anywhere in the world."

"With over 70 pieces of content coming in every minute covering more than 2.7 million properties around the world, occasionally a review or business that does not meet TripAdvisor's guidelines may slip through the cracks, and in these rare cases, our members can report the material to us, helping maintain the high quality content of our site."

TripAdvisor reportedly developed a new algorithm based on techniques pioneered to combat credit card and insurance fraud that will check every review posted every minute by visitors.

V8-powered Ford Ranger to take on Dakar Rally
Jul 29th 2013, 17:32

This is one coyote that definitely loves the open range.

Ford Racing has announced it will be entering two Ranger pickups in the grueling Dakar Rally next January.

The compact trucks are based on the global Ford Ranger not currently sold in the United States, and powered by a competition version of the 5.0-liter Coyote V8 used in the Ford Mustang and F-150.

Production Rangers are available with either a four-cylinder gas engine or four and five-cylinder turbodiesels.

Read: New Ford Ranger SUV spotted testing

The trucks will be built and fielded by a team from South Africa, one of the countries where the Ranger is produced and where similar vehicles are contested in the Donaldson Cross Country Motor Racing Championship, which adheres closely to Dakar rules.

Ford engineering outfits from around the globe will be contributing to their development.

Modifications to the double cabs include a composite body, Magneti Marelli engine management system that tunes the engine to deliver about 350 hp and 412 lb-ft of torque, limited slip front and rear differentials and water-cooled Brembo brakes.

The 2014 Dakar Rally runs over 3,000 miles through Argentina, Chile and Bolivia from January 5-18.

Ford introduced the latest Ranger in 2011, but withheld it from the US market saying it would be too close in size, price and fuel economy to the popular F-150 to fit consumer demand.

If it made more like this one, there's no telling if that would still be the case.

BMW unveils i3 electric car
Jul 29th 2013, 14:09

BMW has big news for drivers in megacities.

The automaker is showing off the production model of its new i3 electric compact that uses carbon-fiber materials to keep the weight down and improve driving performance.

CEO Norbert Reithofer stressed at a New York unveiling that the car was designed as an electric from the ground up. The i3 is "born electric," he said.

The company says the i3, built in Leipzig, Germany, will go from zero to 62 mph in 7.2 seconds. Its range is billed as 80-100 miles. Models with an optional range extender gas engine can go as 200 miles.

Standard models feature a lithium-ion battery pack powering a rear-mounted electric motor and seating for four, the back seats made more accessible through the use of rear-opening coach doors.

The i3 goes on sale in November in the U.S. next year for $42,275.

Study says driving in the USA peaked in 2004
Jul 29th 2013, 12:16

Back in May, the  U.S. Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) published a study that showed Americans are driving less.

The PIRG study made a number of intriguing claims, all of which pointed to the fact that driving in the U.S. peaked in 2004. And due to a range of factors -- notably, the increased use of mass transit and less interest in car ownership -- it's unlikely that driving rates will ever fully recover.

Now, Michael Sivak of the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute has published a study of his own that seems to back the PIRG's claims.

To reach his conclusions, Sivak examined driving trends in the U.S. from 1984 to 2011. He paid particular attention to the distances traveled per licensed driver, per vehicle, and per household.

On each of those counts, the figures have plummeted since 2004.

According to a press release, the number of miles driven per licensed driver and per household have both tumbled 9 percent. The number of miles traveled per registered vehicle is off 5 percent:

The latest rates (2011) are: distance driven per person, 8,494 miles (down from 9,314 in 2004); distance driven per licensed driver, 12,492 miles (down from 13,711 in 2004); distance driven per household, 22,069 miles (down from 24,349 in 2004); and distance driven per registered vehicle, 11,318 miles (down from 11,946 in 2004).

Like the PIRG, Sivak says that Americans haven't simply been driving less because of the slumping economy. American driving peaked in 2004, years before the Great Recession hit, and the figures haven't recovered at the same pace as the financial sector.

In other words, Americans (and likely others around the world) think about cars and transportation differently now, causing a shift in our driving habits.w.

150th anniversary of Henry Ford's birth celebrated
Jul 29th 2013, 11:55

DEARBORN, Mich. –  Ford Motor Co. founder Henry Ford — who was born 150 years ago this Tuesday — is being celebrated with a party at his suburban Detroit estate.

State resolutions pronouncing Tuesday "Henry Ford Day" in Michigan will be presented to Ford family members, including current Ford Chairman Bill Ford. The Saturday party in Dearborn will also feature music, vintage automobiles and a farmers market to commemorate Henry Ford's interest in farming.

Henry Ford was born in Dearborn on July 30, 1863. He built his first car in 1896 and founded Ford Motor seven years later.

Ford revolutionized the industry in 1913, when he opened the first moving automobile assembly line to build the Model T. He also doubled wages to $5 per day, setting a new standard for the time.

FOXNews.com: Test Drive: 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT

Test Drive: 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT
Jul 26th 2013, 20:15

The very successful Jeep Grand Cherokee has been updated for 2014 with a refreshed face featuring LEDs and projector beam headlights, new interior tech and trim, and the return of a diesel engine option, now good for 30 mpg on the highway.

Then there's the one that can go 160 mph on the highway…assuming you drive it to Germany, of course.

The Grand Cherokee SRT is a Hemi-powered, high performance version of Jeep's top-selling model modified by Chrysler's Street and Racing Technology division with menacing bodywork, low-profile tires, a sport-tuned suspension and not a trail rating in sight.

The enormous nostril-like air vents on the hood are an indication of fire-breather underneath it, a 470 horsepower 6.4-liter V8 tamed by a new for Grand Cherokee eight-speed automatic transmission that can accelerate the two-and-a-half-ton beast to sixty miles per hour in less than five seconds, crack off quarter-mile runs in the 13s and lug a trailer that weighs up to 7200 pounds, though probably not all of the above at the same time.

In place of the air-suspended 4x4 system available on the more off-road focused Grand Cherokee models, the SRT gets adaptive dampers and an all-wheel-drive setup with settings for Sport and Track rather than Sand and Rock.

In both of those modes it sends the bulk of its power to the rear wheels for a more sports car-like feel, sharpens the throttle and steering, and chooses more aggressive mapping for the transmission, which can also be manually shifted by paddles behind the steering wheel. "Track" turns off the traction and stability control for those looking to illicit some serious mayhem.

An adjustable launch control feature lets you hold the engine anywhere between 2,000 and 3,200 RPM with your foot on the brake, then perfectly manages the power when you release it. According to the on-board performance computer (which tracks acceleration, g-forces and braking distance) it got the big girl to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds for me, and that wasn't even on a straight road.

When the curves turn to twists, she holds on pretty well, too. Sure, there's more than enough body roll that you'll never forget you're a couple of heads higher than the gal in the Dodge Challenger SRT8 that just passed by, but the grip from the optional three-season tires (all-season rubber comes standard) is substantial, and that drivetrain setup really lets you put the power down coming out of the corners.

The seats help out here, too. They're deep racing-style buckets with luscious, grippy cloth inserts that pair nicely with the chunky sport steering wheel. Common with other 2014 Grand Cherokees, the SRT has a new instrument cluster with a configurable flat-panel display and an updated UConnect infotainment system -- here with standard navigation -- that'll read incoming text messages aloud, provide a WiFi hotspot for a fee and is generally better to operate than many competing touch screen systems.

Not much else changes, which is fine. After four years on the market, the Grand Cherokee still looks great inside and out and feels as if you could drive it through the base of the Hoover Dam. Granted, it weighs about 600 pounds more than a Ford Explorer or Toyota 4Runner, but the extra metal is put to very good use.

Better still, in spite of all of the performance upgrades, the Grand Cherokee SRT has an unexpectedly comfortable ride that can take a good beating from beat-up roads. A little head toss on lateral bumps is the only nod to its absurd abilities.

As for fuel economy, do you remember the Greek economy? Yea, it's just as disastrous as that. While SRT proudly points to a cylinder deactivation system that allows the engine to often run on just four cylinders and deliver an EPA rating of 15 mpg combined, I was looking at 12 mpg pretty much the whole time I had it -- most of which was spent just cruising along with all those regular Grand Cherokees that were probably getting twice that and cost half as much to buy.

The Grand Cherokee SRT has an appropriately hefty base price of $63,990 that can be optioned up to well over seventy grand with things like a Harmon Kardon audio system, panoramic sunroof and rear seat entertainment system, so it ain't the cheapest Jeep.

In fact, it is by far the most expensive. But compared to European hot rod SUVs like the Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG, BMW X5M and Land Rover Range Rover Sport, which can easily go for $100,000 or more, it's quite reasonable for the person that thinks a hot rod SUV is a reasonable thing.

Chefs who cook for world leaders come together to feed New York's hungry
Jul 26th 2013, 19:13

The members of Le Club des Chefs de Chefs are used to preparing elaborate meals for royalty and heads of state, but Saturday they'll be feeding a much humbler clientele.

The chefs of the world's leaders will be cooking more than 200 New Yorkers in need at the Xavier Mission - and they won't be serving soup. The dishes these chefs are serving are "fit for royalty."

Chopped Summer Salad with Pecans and Tarragon Dressing

Maple and Canadian Whole Grain Mustard Glazed Cedar Planked Salmon

Anglesey Eggs (Wyau Môn)

The event is presented in partnership with InterContinental Hotels & Resorts, which will be offering the dishes on their menus during the week of July 29th. A portion of the proceeds from the "Fit for Royalty" menu will be donated to local food banks in participating hotels' cities.

Among the chefs participating in the event are Gregor Zimmermann, chef in charge of official receptions of Switzerland, and Ulrich Kerz, chef to German Chancellor Angela Merkel. FoxNews.com LIVE's Jonathan Hunt spoke to the chefs ahead of their trip to the Xavier Mission. Click the video above to find out more.

FOXNews.com: Five classics you'd never guess are so valuable

Five classics you'd never guess are so valuable
Jul 26th 2013, 18:48

Some classics wear their price tags on their sleeves. Look at a fuel-injected '57 Chevy Bel Air, and it's immediately apparent that it's valuable merchandise. On the other hand, there are the sleepers of the classic car world, the cars that are worth a lot of money but it's only obvious to those in-the-know. Your Accord-driving neighbor would, for example, never guess that the proceeds from a restored VW microbus could put his kid through college at a very good state school. Here are five you'd never suspect of being quite pricey:

Volkswagen "Samba" Microbus: There's a simple rule of thumb with VW Microbuses: More windows equals more money. The 21- and 23-window versions of the venerable '50s bus can bring money that would shock the hippies who ran them into the ground in the 1960s—around 70 grand for a nicely restored one. They've even been known to break $100,000 at the right auction.

Fiat Jolly: The Jolly was an open-top version of the classic Fiat 500 that was meant to be stowed onboard yachts and used as transport in places like Monaco and Positano. They have no doors, the seats are made of wicker and the tops are meant only to provide shade. Appallingly cute, the pint-sized Jolly can sell for upwards of $70,000.

Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser: The classic Jeep-like 1960-1984 Toyota Land Cruiser was one tough vehicle—so tough that they invited horrific abuse, which explains the dearth of clean examples. A nicely restored one sold at an auction in Scottsdale, Ariz., last January for $88,000. We've heard stories of $100,000-plus examples. In response to FJ40s getting so expensive, first-generation 4Runners are starting to increase in value. Don't say we didn't mention it.

Ford Bronco: The humble 1966-77 Ford Bronco was a product of the same team that brought us the classic 1964½ Mustang. Unlike the Mustang, which sat on Ford Falcon underpinnings, the first Bronco was a totally unique platform.  The size and shape were just right, and collectors have latched onto them in droves. Totally stock, unrusted Broncos without cut fenders and flares are rare; it takes around $30,000 to get a nice one.

BMW Isetta: Prior to becoming known as the ultimate driving machine, BMW suffered from a case of bipolar disorder, selling the super-expensive V-8 507 roadster and the tiny egg-like Isetta microcar out of the same showrooms.  It's no shock that the gorgeous 507 roadster sells for a ton of money, but the fact that Isettas can pull more than $40,000 is surprising indeed.
