Five of the 'official' classic cars of summer
Jun 30th 2013, 04:00

Summer is here in full-swing, and who wants to be insulated from it with air conditioning, satellite radio, pollen filters and dual-pane windows? Nope, you want to be smelling the exhaust fumes, listening to the tires chirp and enjoying the sight of a classic car in motion. Here are five of our nominees for the "official" classic car of summer:

  1. 1955-57 Chevrolet Bel Air Convertible: As the old ad copy goes, there's baseball, hot dogs, apple pie and Chevrolet. Few things are more quintessentially American than the aforementioned, and the "tri-five" Chevy Bel Airs built in 1955, 1956 and 1957 are their automotive equivalents. All are great years; the '55 is clean and understated and the '57 is finned and audacious, while the '56 falls somewhere in between. All were available with Chevrolet's brilliant new small-block V-8 in varying states of tune. A Bel Air convertible in Tropical Turquoise is the perfect summer day cruiser for you and four or five friends.
  2. 1963-67 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible: Just as iconic as the Bel Air but much sportier, the second generation or C2 Corvette served notice to the Europeans that the people who stormed the beaches at Normandy could damn well design a world-class sports car. Any year is spectacular; the 1963-64 cars sell for a bit of a discount because they have drum rather than disc brakes. The 1967 sells at a slight premium because it wasn't supposed to have happened at all (the all new C3 got pushed to 1968) and many perceive it to be the best of the C2s. Those looking for bargain-priced Corvette convertibles would do well to check out a C4 from the late 1980s or early 1990s. Look hard and you might find one of those for less than 10 grand.
  3. 1976-86 Jeep CJ-7: Another classic American with roots in the original Willys Jeep from WWII, the CJ-7 is best remembered by baby boomers and Gen-Xers for the flamboyant special editions that American Motors would create to stoke already impressive demand for what was in reality a fairly crude old vehicle. Today, few things say summer like a CJ with the doors removed and a dog with a bandana in the passenger seat.
  4. 1965-66 Ford Mustang: The Mustang celebrates the big 5-0 next year, but in advance of that, we'd like to remind the classic car world that few cars are as satisfying to own as a first-generation Mustang. They seat four people comfortably, even the six-cylinder cars can keep up with modern traffic and they're drop-dead beautiful. Our choice for the ultimate summer 'Stang? A GT convertible with the 270 hp high performance V-8, styled steel wheels and a four-speed.
  5. 1962-80 MGB: Well it may not be American, but MG was the sports car America loved first according to the ads. The MGB was the last car sold in the U.S. under the famous MG brand, and in spite of various rumors and false starts, it looks like it will stay that way. Not the fastest or the best-handling sports cars of all time, the MGB was simple, far better built than most people realize and actually quite reliable (most of the problems with their infamous British electrical systems were caused by tinkerers trying to "improve" things). MGBs are still common, parts are in better supply than they were when the cars were new and few things offer more pleasure on a twisty road on a warm summer day.

Government probes Honda Odyssey brake problem
Jun 29th 2013, 14:26

DETRIOT –  U.S. safety regulators are investigating some Honda Odyssey minivans because they can brake without the driver pressing the pedal.

The probe affects nearly 344,000 vans from the 2007 and 2008 model years.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says it has received 22 complaints from owners about unexpected braking. In some cases, the vans braked while drivers were accelerating, cutting the speed by up to 30 miles per hour. Five people told the agency that dealers found trouble in a steering angle sensor in the electronic stability control system.

The agency says it has no reports of crashes or injuries.

Investigators will determine if the problem happens frequently enough to seek a recall.

Power Wheels Corvette now on sale
Jun 28th 2013, 19:27

The Corvette turns 60 years old this weekend, but Chevy's already chasing after the next generation of buyers, with a little help from Fisher-Price.

A new Power Wheels Corvette was unveiled today, featuring the style of the upcoming seventh-generation 'Vette known as the Stingray.

The single seat open top roadster features a two speed gearbox with reverse, and a blistering top speed of 6 miles per hour. But unlike the 450 hp V8 powertrain in the adult version, this one's battery-powered, just like the real one the kids will be buying 60 years from now – maybe.

The price is just $275, but you've got to weight under 65 pounds to enjoy it. Otherwise, you'll have to spring for the $51,995 original.

Either way, still cheaper than a Porsche.

Driving Shoe Test Drive: Racequip Euro
Jun 28th 2013, 17:53

Henry Ford would've loved these shoes. They're basic, affordable and only come in black.

At $99.95, the Racequip Euro is one of the lowest-priced fireproof racing boots on the market, but comes outfitted with all of the features you need.

There's an ankle strap that can do double duty as a lace holder, low-friction wear pads on the sides of the toe made from a proprietary synthetic material with the mysterious name of Carbon-L, and a rubber sole that runs up the back of the heel and is finished with the requisite tire tread pattern in case your car breaks down and you have to get out and push.

Style elements are limited to white contrast stitching and the Racequip logo plastered on the sides, giving them a classic speedway look, but the uppers are roomier than some and have a ribbed ankle that delivers extra flexibility.

Racequip's core market is the oval track/drag racing scene, but from the looks of them, and with a name like Euro, there's no reason these shoes shouldn't be able to get a ride in sports cars, too. To find out if they've got the stuff, I wore them to the Monticello Motor Club, the fanciest track I know of, and took them for a whirl in the high-tech Nissan GT-R.

There, in a brilliant moment of synchronicity, when I went to borrow a helmet off the club's rack, I grabbed the only Racequip among the dozens there. Unlike the shoes, it was white.

The suede the boots are constructed of isn't as buttery soft as the expensive stuff, but they broke in quickly. The soles feel good on the pedals, the rolled heel offers a perfect pivot, and that Carbon-L does slip and slide against the sides of the footwell better than most natural materials do.

The GT-R very famously has an automatic transmission, but I took a seat in a Spec Miata racer just to see how they'd do in a three-pedal environment, and they worked well there, too. The wide forefoot easily bridging the gap between brake and accelerator for some good old fashioned heel and toe downshifting excitement.

That's sure to be even truer if you're a giant. Unlike any off the shelf equipment I can think of, the Euros are available from size 1 to 20, the price jumping slightly to $109.95 above size 13.

The only downside of the Euros is that they are as well-ventilated as some of the higher-end boots are, so you could end up being a literal hot shoe on a steamy summer day. Of course, for the price of the ritzy stuff you can get a pair of these plus a pair of Racequip gloves and still have enough left over for a tank of gas for the ride home from the track.

Henry would surely approve.

Starbucks customers name baby Logan Jackson Dixon
Jun 28th 2013, 17:22

A Connecticut couple has named its baby with help from customers at a Starbucks coffee shop.

Twenty-five-year-old Jennifer James and 24-year-old Mark Dixon of West Haven told the New Haven Register (http://bit.ly/1adT5d6) they had been struggling between two names for the boy they are expecting in September, so they decided to put it to a vote.

They placed signs at the Starbucks on the New Haven Green, where they are regulars, asking people to vote for either the name Jackson or Logan.

The couple said it got the idea for the voting based on a system used by that Starbucks location, where customers cast votes for the store's employee of the month.

"We saw that and thought we might as well see how it works," Dixon said.

They received about 1,800 votes in the coffee cup serving as a ballot box. The couple said voters did not limit themselves to the two choices they were given.

"We've gotten Obama, Jebediah, Lincoln. Someone put (a) write-in, Webster," James said.

James said that when she realized Dixon would sound similar to Jackson, she began pulling for the name Logan.

"I don't know why I didn't realize the `Jackson Dixon' thing, but I think once I realized that, he was going to be Logan no matter what," she said.

The name Logan also was favored by the customers, but ultimately both names won.

The couple said it will name the baby Logan Jackson Dixon.

Five cabin alternatives
Jun 28th 2013, 15:19

Summer is here and for some people that means long, relaxing weekends at the cabin. But if you can't afford a lake house or summer home, here are some affordable summer retreats that ensure you'll have a place to unwind this year.

Tiny Cabins

A summer retreat doesn't have to be a sprawling multi-bedroom lake house. If you want an affordable place to spend your summer days, think smaller. Companies like Kanga Room Systems and Cabin Fever offer tiny, pre-fabricated cabins at an affordable price. Starting under $10,000 for a cabin, Kanga Room's cabins range from a minuscule 14 feet by 14 feet, up to a more spacious 16 feet by 40 feet. But just because they are small doesn't mean that you have to skimp on the amenities. Options and upgrades on the cabins include bamboo hardwood flooring, a front porch, and indoor plumbing. Cabin Fever's cottages start around $17,500 and feature similar options. While these mini-cottages might be tight, they can at least get you to the lake, allowing you to spend your summers on the water or at the beach.

Tree Tent

Camping doesn't have to mean sleeping on the ground. If you want to elevate your camping experience, check out Tensile's Stingray. Combining the protection of a tent with the free-swinging freedom of a hammock, these tree-top dwellings are the perfect way to give a camping trip a new sense of adventure. For a larger and more permanent tree-top adventure, try the Luminaire Tree Tent. More like a cross between a tent and tree-top cabin, these spherical, semi-permanent structures can be installed with suspension wires several feet off the ground and sport a number of deluxe options, like a wood stove, water tank and a solar power station — perfect for those who want to camp, but not have to rough it.

Cabin Rental

Cabin rentals aren't always easy to find, forcing you to rely on friends or family or recommendations, or turning to strangers on Craigslist. Fortunately there are a number of new sites and apps out there looking to help vacationers land the perfect rental. Sites like Dwellable, VRBO and HomeAway allow you to quickly sort through hundreds of rentals based on location, while filtering your search by price, number of rooms, access to amenities and proximity to the beach. And by acting as an intermediary, these sites look to protect vacationers from unscrupulous landlords, removing cottage and cabin listings that don't meet the sites' standards.

House Boat Rental

Why rent a house by the lake when you can rent a house right on the lake? A house boat rental is the perfect way to maximize your weekend at the lake, allowing you to fish, swim and sunbathe all from deck of your floating home away from home. For rentals and prices, check out sites like Houseboating.org or Foreverhouseboats.com, which offer rentals at various locations across the country, or search for a houseboat rental closer to home.

Ranger Cabins

For a truly remote getaway, the U.S. National Forest Service has a number of ranger cabins available to rent. These rustic rentals were once used by forest rangers but are now open to the public, giving you private access to some of the most pristine wilderness the country has to offer.

To land yourself a cabin, select the National Forest Service region you want to vacation in and search for "cabin rental." Or you can head over to Recreation.gov, the government's online booking service for the National Park Service and National Forests, and search for openings near you.

Sage Karam leans on wrestling to aid racing career
Jun 28th 2013, 14:07

Overcome by fury after a bitter defeat, Sage Karam started running home.

It was about a dozen miles between Karam's house in Nazareth, Pa. and the gym where he'd just lost with a state wrestling tournament berth on the line. But Karam was so upset about blowing his shot at states that he grabbed his shoes and took off before anyone stop him.

Karam got roughly halfwaybefore his father found him sprinting aimlessly.

"He turned me around and said to go get my medal," Karam said. "I didn't want it."

Karam looks back at that day now and chuckles.

But he's also discovered that the tenacity and intense competitiveness needed to thrive in wrestling also works at nearly 200 mph.

The 18-year-old Karam hasn't even started his senior year in high school back in the hometown he shares with Mario Andretti (Nazareth, Pa.), but he might just be the brightest young American prospect in open-wheel racing.

Karam has won two straight races in the Indy Lights feeder series, including a dominant run last weekend in Iowa after his first career series win at Milwaukee, and is now atop the standings. He will next race July 6 as the hometown favorite at Pocono Raceway.

Karam credits much of his success in racing to wrestling, which he believes gives me an advantage over his fellow drivers.

"Wrestling teaches you to be mentally tough. The sacrifices that you have to make within a season to make weight. It's all for you, but then it's also for the team, and you have to put the team before yourself. Just taught me a bunch of life lessons and just made me so mentally tough. And I just think that no other driver can get that tough without experiencing it," Karam said.

Karam grew like many kids in eastern Pennsylvania, wrestling and playing football.

But from the time he could barely walk, Karam has been at his best behind a wheel.

Karam said he's been racing since he was four. By 12, Karam was perhaps the best young karts driver in the country, and the following year he became the youngest winner of the Skip Barber Shootout.

Karam signed with Andretti Autosport in 2010 and won the USF2000 rookie of the year award and series championship before moving up to the Star Mazda series. He spent two seasons in Star Mazda, winning four poles and five races, before Schmidt Peterson Motorsports signed him to run Indy Lights this year.

"Things are going good. I learned a lot in years past that has gotten me prepared for this. I was very prepared for Indy Lights. Sam (Schmidt) saw that and took me under his wing," Karam said.

Karam didn't take long to acclimate to Indy Lights. He qualified first in Indianapolis and finished third, and since then he's unbeaten.

Karam, who to this point is at his strongest on ovals, qualified on the pole the following week in Milwaukee. He was passed on the first lap by Zach Veach, but he maintained his composure — again, a lesson he said he picked up in wrestling — and rallied for a breakthrough victory.

He then moved on to Iowa, where he had already won three times in various events, and led 67 laps en route to victory.

"I knew I could do it. I raced at Milwaukee and Iowa differently than I did in any other race knowing that I could win. That was the difference," Karam said.

Karam intends to return to Nazareth Area High once the Indy Lights season is finished. He won't play his senior year of football, but he plans on taking one more crack at the state wrestling tournament next winter.

As for racing, Karam's goal is to win the Indy Lights title and hope that's enough to convince sponsors to pay for a full-time IndyCar ride in 2014.

In the meantime he'll be wrestling — which Karam said has been helped by racing too.

"Race car drivers, you have to have good vision. We can make decisions really quick. Our hand movements are also pretty speedy," Karam said. "When I'm in a match and I need to make something happen fast and I need to make a decision quick, racing gives me that advantage."

Meatball Shop pleases grandmas and drunkards alike
Jun 28th 2013, 14:48

It's no secret that everyone loves meatballs, and when two native New Yorkers decided to open a restaurant dedicated to the yummy balls of goodness it was a recipe for success.

The Meatball Shop is the brain child of Daniel Holzman and Michael Chernov, who have been best friends since high school. Chernov is a "front of the house" guy while Holzman found his calling in the kitchen.

"If you told me five years ago that I was going to have to roll 2,000 meatballs a day, I wouldn't have ever taken the job," Holzman joked to FoxNews.com's Kitchen Superstars.

The duo opened their first Meatball Shop location on New York's Lower East Side in 2010 and have since expanded to five locations across New York City.

"We knew we were going to open up a late night place – it was a place to sop up the booze after the bar," said Holzman. "But what we didn't anticipate … (was) groups of 75-year-old grandmas coming together to have lunch and five-year-old birthday parties at the same time."

The Meatball Shop offers a completely customizable menu sure to please grandmas and drunkards alike. There are five different kinds of meatballs, five different sauces, and a host of ways to enjoy them: in a sandwich, on a salad, even on top of risotto.

"I feel like there are two kinds of restaurants. There's the kind of restaurant where you want to just close your eyes and say, whoever the chef is in the kitchen I want them to decide what I want to eat because they know best. Then there's the kind of place you want to go to probably a little more often where you're like, I want that thing that I know that I love and its consistent," said Holzman.

The Meatball shop is a simple restaurant with a simple concept, but it resonates with New Yorkers and visitors from around the world who come to enjoy the universally-loved treats.

"We have one rule. Only. Which is have a good time," said Holzman. "We're going to serve you something we're really proud of that is super hopefully delicious and everybody gets to walk away with a smile."

Test Drive: 2013 Nissan Juke NISMO
Jun 28th 2013, 15:45

For those who don't think the alien bullfrog known as the Nissan Juke is enough of a head-turner already, they've cranked it up to 11, or at least eight or nine.

The 2013 Juke NISMO introduces a new trim level for the oddball compact crossover that's been styled and sped up by Nissan's motorsport division, which also builds racing cars that compete at Le Mans. This will not be doing that.

Nevertheless, its functional aerodynamic body kit featuring an updated front fascia with LEDs, rocker panel extensions and a rear diffuser increases downforce by up to 37 percent, according to Nissan, and attention getting 50 percent, according to me.

Dark, 10-spoke aluminum wheels with low-profile summer tires, a large roof edge spoiler, and red pinstriping and mirror caps complete the straight-from-the-tuner-shop look.

The Juke is already a love it or hate it proposition, and the visual updates will likely push you further into whatever category you currently fall into, but not get you to switch sides. I'm a fan, and met more than a few more while driving the car. To them, the street cred this thing has is off the charts.

That may be because its beauty, or beastliness, is more than skin deep. At least a little bit more.

The suspension has been lowered and stiffened, the steering feel firmed up and power from the 1.6-liter turbocharged engine increased from 188 hp to 197 hp, making it the most potent four-cylinder in Nissan's lineup, by far, including the one used in the relatively gargantuan Altima.

Very comfy, heavily-bolstered racing-style seats that are way above the Juke's pay grade and an Alcantara-wrapped wheel drive the high(er) performance point home. A front-wheel-drive model is available with a six-speed manual for $23,780, while the all-wheel-drive version tested here comes with a CVT automatic for $26,080. That's pretty much the only choice you have to make, other than white, black or silver paint and whether or not to go for the $1,170 premium/audio navigation system.

The AWD system is particularly impressive. As with the standard-issue Jukes, it's equipped with a very effective torque-vectoring system that shifts power front to back and side to side as necessary to help get you quickly, and stably through turns.

Put your foot to the floor in a sharp curve and you can really feel it going to work. The Juke handles much better than a tallish take on an economy car should, and the NISMO mods ratchet everything up a few degrees.

Rare among crossover AWD systems, you can lock this one into 4x4 if conditions are poor, or front-wheel-drive for improved fuel economy. Its EPA rating is 25 city/30 hwy, but selectable Eco and Sport modes that adjust the engine, throttle and transmission one way or the other will alter that in the real world.

Unfortunately, CVTs always err towards efficiency and this one's indirect power delivery is not well suited to the Juke's furious image, even when you switch it to "manual" which allows you to pretend it's a six-speed.

I haven't had a chance to check out a car fitted with the true stick, but since you have to give up the all-wheel-drive and independent rear suspension to get it, I suspect there was someone named Hobson working on the Juke product planning team.

Still, this is an enjoyably fleet car that's almost as entertaining to drive as it is to look at, as long as all-out speed isn't what you're after. Bottom line: If you're the type of person that's already attracted to the Juke's flair, you might as well go all-in with the NISMO.

Just use the front doors when you do, the ones in the rear are kind of small.

New McDonald's menu items
Jun 28th 2013, 13:35

McDonald's menus vary around the world depending on what appeals to country-specific consumer taste buds. Items that are either in the process of being launched worldwide, or even country-specific ones, go through an arduous process in order to be able to reach McDonald's taste profiles and marketing goals.

Imitation American products like the 1955 burger, which hints at the year of Ray Kroc's first McDonald's restaurant in Des Plaines, Illinois, tastes nothing like an American barbecue burger, because McDonald's has manipulated the overall taste to appeal to the German taste, where the burger is a hit. Other items like the Le M from France, and the NY Classic, also from Germany, are successes in country, but are profiled for their home countries, and have no current plans to move into the United States menu's.

Though McDonald's is constantly developing new ideas and recipes, the company reports that they will not be releasing vegetarian-specific menu items in in countries until its consumer crowd can be large enough to receive a "product with good quality and taste" says Chris Young, McDonald's Senior Director.

Shaker Fries are in the process of being brought to the United States after unwavering success in Asia, as reported by Young. This simple concept, including a small bag, a packet of seasoning, and a serving of fries brings a whole new flavor to one of our favorite fast food fries, profiling them for taste specifically. Though the flavors for the United States haven't been fully developed yet, it has been hinted that there will most likely be a ranch flavored zest-ing packet.

The Bacon Habanero Ranch Quarter Pounder is a revolutionary item to add to a menu like McDonald's, and as the name hints, this burger is for spice lovers only. On top of this Quarter pounder comes topped with white cheddar, lettuce, tomato, a new habanero ranch sauce, and of course, bacon. This burger has serious heat when it's tasted, so if you don't like spice, you might want to get a large drink or stay away.

McSharing is becoming quite popular in countries like Germany that sell products in larger portions for group sharing. With so many cultures being family or group-oriented, people prefer to share their food as opposed to buying several different items. The Chicken Box comes in variations of '3er and 5er' choices, which includes varied portions of Mcnuggets, Chicken Sticks, and McBites.

The Egg White Delight, which was already launched in the United States earlier this year, has so many questions surrounding it. McDonald's Director of Global Nutrition Julia Braun highlighted that this McMuffin variation has eight grams of whole grain, and cuts down drastically on cholesterol by replacing the traditional Mcdonald's egg with an egg white. She is looking to incorporate more grains into McDonald's menu items, focusing on whole grain buns and sprinkled oats on bread specifically, for more rounded nutritional content.

9 tips for an outdoor kitchen that lets you enjoy the party
Jun 28th 2013, 08:00

Have you ever found yourself running back and forth between cooking indoors and cooking outdoors on a warm afternoon? The best way to prevent this from happening is to properly design your outdoor kitchen so that it can function like your indoor kitchen. Now, this doesn't mean you need a large outdoor kitchen -- in fact, a small one might be just what you need. Prevent unnecessary trips inside by doing all the prep work ahead of time, and when it's time to cook, make sure you get all your essentials together before you start -- it's easy to forget about the paper towels or the trash can until you actually need it.

If you are designing an outdoor kitchen or looking for ideas on how to improve your existing outdoor kitchen, follow these tips and you'll find yourself right in the middle of the party, even while you're cooking.

Make sure your outdoor kitchen has all the essential spaces: prep, cook, serve, clean. This will make it easy for you to do all the work outside.

A satellite kitchen is perfect if you plan to do the bulk of your prep work in your actual kitchen. Locating your outdoor kitchen adjacent to your indoor kitchen will help you move food back and forth quickly, and if you forget anything, you know it's close by.

Including a bar top in your kitchen allows guests to sit and talk while you prepare and cook. This brings the party to the cook. Many guests enjoy being close to the cook, and with a bar top they can watch all the action while still staying out of the main kitchen space.

If you are looking for a way to improve your outdoor kitchen and don't want to build in a bar top, consider using a long table with bar stools. This also can act as a great prep area if you don't have enough counter space.

Keep the dining area close to the outdoor kitchen, too. This will give your guests a great place to sit while you cook and will keep the party close to the kitchen.

Put your beer or water tap at the end of the bar. This will allow people to come up to the kitchen without interfering with the cook. Proper placement of the mini fridge is important, too. You don't want too many people in the kitchen, and keeping these types of appliances at the end of the bar will control where people congregate near the kitchen.

Much like having the dining space close by, having a living space close by will allow the cook to interact with guests while they hang out, waiting for the barbecue.

Large kitchens allow for family-style cooking. This is great for people who want to help prepare and cook the food. Make sure there is plenty of counter space for group cooking.

Whether with color, architecture or materials, make your outdoor kitchen a focal point. This will help draw guests into the kitchen area while you cook. This covered kitchen, which allows for the party to be centered around the kitchen, is a great example.

Elvis' Cadillac station wagon among items at auction
Jun 28th 2013, 11:52

Elvis Presley's Cadillac station wagon, Steve McQueen's old truck and prescription sunglasses worn by John Lennon are among hundreds of items once owned by celebrities that are scheduled to be auctioned in California next month.

The Mecum Auction Company said Wednesday it will be displaying and auctioning about 2,000 pieces of celebrity-related memorabilia in Santa Monica, Calif. on July 26-27.

Mecum, which specializes in the sale of collector cars, says one of the auction's highlights will be Elvis' 1972 Cadillac Custom Estate Wagon. "The King of Rock n' Roll" owned the car from 1972 until his death in 1977, according to Mecum's Web site.

The car was kept in the Las Vegas home of Colonel Tom Parker, Elvis' manager, and then at the Las Vegas Hilton. It was later sent to Graceland, Elvis' longtime Memphis home, before the car was auctioned off with other Elvis possessions in 1999, according to Mecum.

Elvis' Cadillac is among several vehicles being auctioned, including a 1969 Chevrolet C/10 Baja race truck and two motorcycles owned by McQueen, a motorcycle owned by Dennis Hopper, and cars that belonged to Frank Sinatra, Ringo Starr and Bette Davis.

Other Elvis-related items included in the auction are his Army induction and discharge papers and rare photos.

The auction will feature other unique pieces of pop culture history, such as Lennon's 1970s-style aviator prescription sunglasses with black plastic frames and amber-tinted lenses. The glasses were consigned by May Pang, Lennon's former personal assistant, who will be in attendance for the auction to authenticate the item, according to Mecum.

Also on the auction block are items from the collection of John Hagner, curator of the Hollywood Stuntman's Hall of Fame. His collection includes a 1944 Captain America costume and a whip used by the main character in the film "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade."

Mecum says items with ties to John Wayne, Marilyn Monroe, Jack Nicholson, Roy Rogers, Hunter S. Thompson, Jimmy Stewart, Burt Reynolds and Gene Kelly also will be auctioned.

Select items will be available online for silent auction beginning July 5 at www.mecum.com.

2014 Ford F-150 Tremor EcoBoost-powered sport truck revealed
Jun 27th 2013, 20:45

Ford's universally popular F-150 SVT Raptor now has a little brother in the form of the all-new 2014 F-150 Tremor. The newcomer is the Ford Motor Company's first EcoBoost-powered F-150 with the short-wheelbase, regular-cab design, and is aimed at buyers looking for a potent sport truck with decent fuel economy.

Under the hood is the familiar 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6, which combines direct injection, variable cam timing and turbocharging technologies to help deliver 365 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque. Our favorite attribute is the torque band: 90 percent of peak torque is available from 1,700 to 5,000 rpm.

Fuel economy is said to be 16/22 mpg city/highway, for the rear-wheel-drive model. Opting for all-wheel drive will diminish those figures slightly.

The engine is paired with a six-speed automatic and a launch-optimized 4.10 rear axle--the shortest final drive ratio offered in an EcoBoosted F-150. An electronic rear differential is also fitted as standard.

To give the vehicle that sporty look, designers have added the F-150's FX Appearance Package, which comes with matte black accents, 20-inch black wheels and body graphics. Inside, there's leather and Alcantara trim, brushed-metal accents and the MyFord Touch with SYNC connectivity system.

Sales of the 2014 Ford F-150 Tremor commence this fall. Look for pricing and EPA-rated fuel economy figures closer to launch.
