Who knew that the creamy dip made of chicken peas was so popular?

Apparently hummus is in such high demand that Sabra Dipping Co., the company that churns out dip, both in big containers and small snack packs moms love to throw in kids' lunches, is looking to cultivate a commercial crop in Virginia to reduce its dependence on the legume's main U.S. growing region—the Pacific Northwest.

In other words, according to the Wall Street Journal, Sabra is looking for a back up supply just in case a chickpea shortage occurs.  They're not saying there is a shortage coming, just that, on the off chance of crop failures in Washington or Idaho, the company will be ready.

"We need to establish the supply chain to meet our growing demand," Sabra's chief technology officer, Tulin Tuzel told the Journal. "We want to reduce the risk of bad weather or concentration in one region. If possible, we also want to expand the growing seasons."

Hummus' popularity is on the rise because Americans are seeking more-healthful snacks. They gobbled up hummus and other so-called refrigerated flavored spreads to the tune of $530 million in 2012, up 11 percent from a year earlier and a 25 percent jump over 2010, according to market-research firm Information Resources Inc.

Battery-powered Buckeye Bullet aiming for land speed record
Apr 30th 2013, 21:00

Published April 30, 2013

FoxNews.com

Ohio State University has a need for speed, but keeps it clean.

A team from OSU's Center for Automotive Research is planning to break the world land speed record for electric vehicles next year with a streamlined car known as the VBB-3, or Venturi Buckeye Bullet 3.

Built in collaboration with Venturi, a boutique electric car company based in Monaco, the VBB-3 is a 38-foot-long all-wheel-drive battery-powered vehicle with 3,000 hp, making it the most powerful EV ever made.

The team is aiming to hit 600 km/h (373 mph) on Utah's Bonneville Salt Flats later this year, and 700 km/h (435 mph) in 2014.

To carry enough energy to do that, the VBB-3 uses a lithium-phosphate battery pack comprised of 2,000 cells that weighs over 3,500 pounds.

It will be piloted by Roger Schroer, a test driver from the Transportation Research Center in East Liberty, Ohio -- an automotive proving ground that boasts a 7.5-mile high speed oval test track where cars can be pushed to speeds well over 200 mph.

The VBB-3 will go after the U.S. speed record in August, and the world record in September. But even if it comes up short, OSU will still be on top.

Its predecessor, the VBB-2.5, is the current record holder at 307 mph, set in Bonneville back in 2010.

Apparently, some needs are never satisfied.

Macy's loses appeal on Martha Stewart goods
Apr 30th 2013, 19:47

Published April 30, 2013

Associated Press

NEW YORK –  A New York appeals court is allowing J.C. Penney Co. to continue to sell a new line of home goods designed by Martha Stewart.

The ruling, which came Tuesday, rejects Macy's request for a preliminary injunction order aiming to block Penney from selling the collection of bedding, cookware and other items labeled JCP Everyday while a larger court battle between the two big retailers over a partnership with the home maven is still pending.

Penney started to sell the JCP Everyday branded goods online and in its stores earlier this month.

Macy's, based in Cincinnati, had argued that the JCP Everyday products violate its long-standing exclusive contract with Martha Stewart in a broad array of products that include bedding and cookware.

HEALDSBURG, Calif. –  Sometimes visitors to MacMurray Ranch, the 1,500-acre (600-hectare) spread owned by movie and TV actor Fred MacMurray for a half-century, want to know: Where's the heliport? Where's the screening room?

Kate MacMurray, Fred's daughter, just smiles.

"This was our home," she explains.

What visitors will find at the ranch is a place that's not much different than when the MacMurray family lived there, right down to the rocking chair with the wide flat arms just right for holding the actor's drink as he sat reading the paper in the evening, close enough to the window to keep an eye on the Black Angus cattle he raised.

MacMurray and his wife, actress June Haver, bought the ranch in 1941 from the Porter family, pioneers who established the farmstead in the 1850s — their old wagon still stands in front of the house. The MacMurrays used it for diversified farming during World War II and later raised cattle.

The MacMurray Ranch is now owned by the Gallo wine family and open to the public only during the Sonoma Wine Country Weekend in August, but it's one of several California wineries with celebrity connections, including wineries owned by "Godfather" director Francis Ford Coppola, the late "Davy Crockett" star Fess Parker, and the late "Perry Mason" star Raymond Burr.

MacMurray, star of such classics as "Double Indemnity" and "The Apartment," and later the star of the popular TV series "My Three Sons," spent his free time at the ranch and was deeply involved in the local agricultural scene. Photographs displayed in the property's refurbished barn show the couple with their prize cattle (owners and beast looking very spiffy). There are also a series of historical photographs following the evolution of the ranch from hops and prunes to livestock and now vines.

"If you held a mirror up to our ranch what would reflect back is the whole history of agriculture in Northern California," MacMurray points out. "It's quite remarkable."

The MacMurray family sold the ranch to the Gallos in 1996, a few years after Fred MacMurray's death, and the land — in a prime area of Sonoma County's renowned Russian River Valley appellation — now has 425 acres of vines, mostly pinot noir grapes which go into Gallo's MacMurray Ranch Russian River Valley Pinot Noir and Russian River Valley Reserve Pinot Noir. The ranch also supplies grapes for the MacMurray Ranch Pinot Gris, a zippy white wine.

When she turned the keys over in August 1996, Kate MacMurray thought "that chapter in our family life was closed," but in 2000 Bob Gallo, son of wine pioneer Julio Gallo, asked her to work with the family as a brand ambassador. MacMurray, a striking figure with a rich laugh and a cascade of copper curls, lives in a small house near the property and travels the world promoting MacMurray Ranch wines.

Although the winery is open to the public only once a year, wine club members get to visit at special events held four times a year. Visitors who go have a chance to see photographs of Fred MacMurray and some of his famous friends, like golfing buddy Bing Crosby, as well as the memorabilia from MacMurray's other hobbies which included skeet shooting, leatherwork and painting.

MacMurray never was nominated for an Oscar or Emmy, but the good-natured actor told his daughter that if she wanted to put an award out, to make it the one he got from an outfit called Popcorn Village USA commending him for making pictures that sold the most popcorn. "He adored popcorn," MacMurray says with a laugh.

Here are more wineries that could leave you with stars in your eyes.

FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA WINERY: Part resort, part winery, this property in Sonoma County has a lot of extras including a swimming pool, cabines (cabanas) equipped with showers for rent, bocce courts and two places to eat including RUSTIC, which has an outdoor patio with a great view of the Alexander Valley. These days, wines from the director of such classics as "The Godfather" are well-established, including the winery's the popular Diamond Collection. His film career is on display here as well with the Movie Gallery featuring lots of memorabilia, including several Academy Awards, Don Corleone's desk from "The Godfather," and the original automobile from "Tucker: The Man and His Dream."

FESS PARKER WINERY & VINEYARD: This winery in California's Central Coast wine growing region has two claims to celebrity fame. It was founded by the late Fess Parker, star of the "Davy Crockett" and "Daniel Boone" TV series and was also featured, under the name Frass Canyon, in the 2004 wine road trip movie "Sideways." (It's where Paul Giamatti's character, Miles, has his meltdown with the spit bucket — funny onscreen, highly inadvisable in real life.) You'll find memorabilia like coonskin caps at the winery gift store, and you can also stay at the Fess Parker Wine Country Inn & Spa, an upscale retreat.

RAYMOND BURR VINEYARDS: The star of TV's "Perry Mason" and "Ironside" also had a passion for wine, which is still celebrated at this small winery in Sonoma County's Dry Creek Valley. There are lots of old photos, "TV Guide" covers and awards in the small tasting room and guests can take their glasses outside to the deck and enjoy sweeping views of the vineyards.

Test Drive: 2013 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible TDI
Apr 30th 2013, 17:44

The Volkswagen Beetle ain't what it used to be.

21st century versions have been more of a fashion accessory than a counter-culture statement, and despite a design that intentionally hearkens back to the original, the latest Beetle launched last year is even less of a cartoon character than those before it.

But there is one Bug available that is unlike any other car on the road.

The 2013 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible TDI is the only diesel-powered drop top ever sold in the United States. Better yet, it's available with a stick shift, so car enthusiasts and hipsters may finally have something to commune over.

It's the same 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel you find in just about every other VW model these days, pumping out 140 hp and 236 lb-ft of front-tire spinning torque. More important to its mission, the motor/transmission combo delivers 41 mpg on the highway according to the EPA, which is kind of a joke.

Not in a bad way. I hit that mark without even trying and kept on going, seeing as high as 44 mpg on a 70 mph interstate run. Diesels are often overachievers in the MPG department, and this one appears to be no exception.  A six-speed automatic is an option and loses 4 mpg, on paper at least.

On pavement, the BC handles with typical VW confidence, but its limits are well within reach and it won't be giving any GTIs the sweats at the local autocross. It's not a fast car by objective measures, but that torque offers nice response when you punch it, even if the party ends a little early. The stopwatch mounted to the dashboard is better suited for seeing how long you can go between fill-ups. (14.5 gallon tank x 41 mpg/65 mph > 9 hours max.)

Easy cruising is more the point of the Beetle Convertible, anyway. It has a fully independent suspension that VW says is sport-tuned, but in reality is as cushy as the cashmere sweater you might wear while driving it on a chilly late spring day.

Given how much of the donor car that's missing, the convertible's chassis is surprisingly rigid. I made a "wrong" turn onto a gravel road that would give a Subaru pause, and the only shakes and rattles were coming from me jamming to the 400-watt Fender audio system that comes with a navigation package that tacks $1,300 on top of TDI's $28,690 starting price.

With the top open, the breeze is bearable at highway speeds, but a large wind blocker that installs over the rear seats knocks it down to near zero when you put the windows up, too. No one can sit back there in this configuration, but even though the seats are large by convertible standards, they're probably better left folded down to expand the trunk, which is not large at all.

Chalk part of that up to the fact that the roof stows much lower than the ones on past Beetles, to the point that you can actually see what's behind you when it's down. Up? Stay in the right lane and you won't have to worry about the enormous blind spot.

Other than all that, the Beetle Convertible is pretty much identical to the coupe. Same body color dash inserts, thin rim steering wheel…the works. My one ergonomic complaint is that the center armrest obstructs both a cupholder and the handbrake lever, creating a simultaneous hindrance to hydration and hoonage.

The retro subcompact drop-top segment is pretty crowded these days, with the tiny Fiat 500c and MINI Cooper Convertible obvious competitors for the Beetle, which is the most practical package of the trio. Not-quite bargain shoppers can pick up a five-cylinder gasoline version for $25,790, or a Turbo model with that GTI engine for $28,590, but then you're edging back into common car territory.

If you're going for a Beetle, you've got to commit.

Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 Convertible in the works?
Apr 30th 2013, 15:58

  • camaro-z28-convertible-660.jpg

The new Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 is such a stripped-down piece of machinery that it only has one speaker, so why not lose the roof, too?

TopSpeed has rendered a convertible version of the upcoming muscle car, and it wouldn't be the first.

Chevrolet offered a variety of Z/28 convertibles throughout the third and fourth generations of the Camaro, and even built one back in 1968 for then-Chevrolet general manager Elliott Estes.

This time around, the handsome, but purely speculative proposition might be a tougher sell.

The new Z/28 has been positioned as the ultimate racetrack-ready Camaro and features a number of weight-trimming modifications aimed at delivering top performance, including carbon fiber bodywork and brakes, a reduction in sound deadening material, no carpet in the trunk and that one-speaker audio system. Chopping the top would actually add about 250 pounds of that back due to the necessary reinforcements, but still lead to a slightly floppier chassis that's not ideal for handling.

Watch: Camaro Z/28 hits the track

At the unveiling of the coupe at the New York Auto Show, GM President Mark Ruess said that the Z/28 would be the last iteration of the fifth-generation Camaro before it is replaced by an all-new vehicle in a couple of years, but that doesn't technically rule out a drop top version wearing the name.

Chevrolet offers a convertible version of its current king of the hill Camaro, the 580 hp ZL1, and it accounts for about a third of sales. Likewise, the popular Corvette 427, which uses the same 7.0-liter V8 that powers the new Z/28, is in many ways a convertible take on the coupe-only Z06, a hardcore performer that plays the same role in the 'Vette lineup that the Z/28 will for the Camaro.

So, when might we find out if the Z/28 is really going topless?

All of the current Camaro Convertibles made their debuts at the Los Angeles Auto Show, which kicks off in late November. With the coupe set to enter production in early 2014, that could put a convertible on the way to showrooms for next summer. If it existed. Which it doesn't.

At least not yet.

Being crowned the "most expensive listing in Manhattan" is quite the feat. Not only are average prices in the Big Apple thousands more than the median home prices across the country, but Manhattan is already home to a $115 million penthouse, owned by Steven Cohen, as well as the $90 million Woolworth penthouse.

And now we can officially add a $125 million penthouse to that expensive roundup.

At first rumored to be listed at $120 million, the Pierre Hotel penthouse just hit the market under brokerage Sotheby's International Realty for that steep $125 million. Located at 795 5th Ave on the Upper East Side, the penthouse occupies the entire 41st, 42nd and 43rd floors. The entire apartment contains 16 rooms, including 5 en-suite bedrooms and 6 bathrooms, plus 4 terraces with sweeping views of Manhattan.

As expected, the living spaces are grand with 23-foot-high ceilings, large windows and architectural details. A private elevator connects all three floors, and the home has a separate guest suite and staff residences. The five fireplaces were made in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.

The home was previously owned by author and stock market analyst Martin Zweig, who died in February at the age of 70. He's best known for accurately predicting the 1987 market crash three days before it happened. He bought the apartment in 1999 for $21.5 million in an all-cash transaction, as the Pierre Hotel does not permit financing. Whoever buys the penthouse won't be worrying about a $439,002 monthly mortgage payment (assuming a 20 percent down payment on a 30-year mortgage) but will be paying the $47,000 monthly maintenance bill.

Scientists use E. coli to produce biofuel for cars
Apr 30th 2013, 14:04

  • ecoli fuel.jpg

E. coli may be getting an image makeover.

Scientists in the U.K. are aiming to put the bacterium, best known as the culprit behind deadly bouts of food poisoning around the globe, to work in the oil business.

By genetically modifying a strain of the organism, a team at the University of Exeter with support from Shell has turned its natural growth process into a way to produce biodiesel from organic waste.

As with many living creatures, E. coli converts sugars into fatty acids as consumes food. With the tweaks that have been made, these fats can then be turned into hydrocarbon molecules that are so close to the ones found in commercial fuels in use today that there's no need to blend them with traditional diesel for use in existing cars, as is the case with many biofuels.

But don't look for it at your local service station just yet.

According to The Sunday Times, it currently takes 100 liters of E. coli 24 hours to produce just one teaspoon of the new fuel, so commercialization is still several years away. However, the biotechnologists behind the process are confident that that it can be refined to a point where the bacteria can churn out the fuel on a one to one basis.

As E. coli can multiply every 20 minutes, the supply is theoretically limited only by the size of the processing plant and the amount of feedstock available, which could include a variety of organic substances ranging from plants to animal waste and even sewage.

It sounds like a dirty job. Good thing they found someone, or something else to do it.

Oh no! The prestigious U.K.'s Restaurant magazine, which does its yearly list of The World's Top 50 Restaurants was apparently undermined by some overzealous reporters who leaked the list ahead of time.

US consumers keep spending despite higher taxes

WASHINGTON (AP) — This year got off to a sour start for U.S. workers: Their pay, already gasping to keep pace with inflation, suddenly shrank with a Social Security tax increase.

That raised the worrisome question, would consumers stop spending and further slow the economy? Apparently, not yet.

On Friday the government said consumers spent 3.2 percent more on an annual basis in the January-March quarter than in the previous quarter — the biggest jump in two years. And in a report Monday, the government said consumers increased their spending in each month, by 0.2 percent in March, 0.7 percent in February and 0.3 percent in January.

US loans from China at issue in debt-ceiling fight

WASHINGTON (AP) — Despite what you may have heard, China isn't the country's biggest creditor. America is.

The bulk of the national debt — soon to exceed a staggering $17 trillion — is held by the Federal Reserve, Social Security system, various pension plans for civil service workers and military personnel, U.S. banks, mutual funds, private pension plans, insurance companies and individual domestic investors.

China is responsible for just a shade over 7 percent of that total debt. And while it remains the single largest foreign lender (just ahead of Japan), China's been slowly trimming its holdings, down from nearly 10 percent a few years ago. Overall, foreign investors — including national central banks — account for roughly a third of the total outstanding federal government debt.

Google invades Siri's turf with iPhone, iPad app

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Siri may be feeling a little job insecurity. The sometimes droll assistant that answers questions and helps people manage their lives on Apple's iPhone and iPad is facing competition from an up-and-coming rival made by Google.

The duel began Monday with the release of a free iPhone and iPad app that features Google Now, a technology that performs many of the same functions as Siri.

It's the first time that Google Now has been available on smartphones and tablet computers that aren't running on the latest version of Google's Android software. The technology, which debuted nine months ago, is being included in an upgrade to Google's search application for iOS, the Apple Inc. software that powers the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. It's up to a user to decide to activate Google Now within the redesigned Google Search app, which is available through Apple's app store.

Hospitals fight superbugs with Germ-zapping 'robots'

NEW YORK (AP) — They sweep. They swab. They sterilize. And still the germs persist.

In U.S. hospitals, an estimated one in 20 patients pick up infections they didn't have when they arrived, some caused by dangerous "superbugs" that are hard to treat.

The rise of these germs, along with increased pressure from the government and insurers, is driving hospitals to try all sorts of new approaches to stop their spread — machines that resemble "Star Wars" robots and emit ultraviolet light or hydrogen peroxide vapors — germ-resistant copper bed rails, call buttons and IV poles, along with antimicrobial linens, curtains and wall paint.

While these products can help get a room clean, their impact is still debatable. There is no widely accepted evidence that these innovations have prevented infections or deaths.

Pending US home sales reach 3-year high in March

WASHINGTON (AP) — The number of Americans who signed contracts to buy homes rose in March to the highest level in three years, pointing to higher sales this spring.

The National Association of Realtors said Monday that its seasonally adjusted index for pending home sales rose 1.5 percent to 105.7. That's the highest since April 2010, when a homebuyer's tax credit boosted sales. It's also above February's reading of 104.1.

There is generally a one-to-two-month lag between a signed contract and a completed sale. Contract signings rose in the South, West and Midwest, and were unchanged in the Northeast.

Chrysler profit falls 65 percent on lower shipments

DETROIT (AP) — Chrysler's first-quarter profit tumbled 65 percent as shipments of cars and trucks fell while it prepared factories to launch several key new vehicles.

The Auburn Hills, Mich., company said Monday that it earned $166 million in the January-March quarter, compared with $473 million a year ago. Revenue fell 6 percent to $15.4 billion.

Chrysler, which is majority-owned by Italy's Fiat SpA, said worldwide vehicle shipments fell 6 percent during the quarter to 574,000.

Express Scripts profit up 39 percent

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Express Scripts says its first-quarter earnings jumped 39 percent compared to last year, when charges tied to its acquisition of competitor Medco Health Solutions hurt the largest U.S. pharmacy benefit manager's performance.

The acquisition more than doubled Express Scripts' revenue in the quarter, more than offsetting higher operating costs for the combined company.

Express Scripts made $373 million, or 45 cents per share, in the quarter, up from $267.8 million, or 55 cents per share, a year earlier. Excluding one-time charges, profit was 99 cents per share.

James Bond studio to open 1st US facility in Georgia

ATLANTA (AP) — The British film studio that's home to the James Bond movie franchise announced plans Monday for its first U.S. film production facility, at a site near Atlanta.

The large-scale film complex will be called Pinewood Atlanta, and Pinewood will manage the facility under an agreement with a group of private investors. Plans call for the studio to be developed on 288 acres south of Atlanta in Fayette County and initially include at least five soundstages as well as production offices.

It's the fifth major studio development or expansion announced in Georgia in recent months. Last week, Atlanta-based developer Jacoby Development said it would build an estimated $1 billion multi-use project north of Atlanta that will include 12 soundstages as well as production offices and an arts and media school aimed at training the next generation for the film industry.

Italy's new government wins 1st confidence vote

ROME (AP) — Italy's new government easily passed its first confirmation vote Monday in parliament after Premier Enrico Letta made concessions to his uneasy coalition allies, promising to relax part of a slate of austerity measures that have weighed on Italians impatient at the slow pace of economic recovery.

While pledging the country will do what the eurozone wants to improve its public finances and debt problem, the center-left leader has to placate his tense two-day-old coalition, including former premier Silvio Berlusconi's conservatives, whose support he needs for confirmation.

The lower house of Parliament, the Chamber of Deputies, approved his fledgling government by a vote of 453 to 153. The government faces the second mandatory confidence vote of confirmation in the Senate on Tuesday afternoon.

If Fido isn't completely satisfied with the quality of his canine cuisine, maybe it's time he got a gourmet pet-tailored panini press.  That's right, a panini press for pet food.

Specialty appliance company, Holstein Housewares, has recently introduced the Pet Treat Maker, an electric panini maker that cooks up bone-shaped biscuits.

"It looks like a panini press or sandwich maker, but it presses out dog biscuits instead," reads a review of the product in The Kitchn."And yes, they're bone- and- paw-shaped!"

The company announced the pet-friendly addition to their appliance line in a press release late last week.

"With Holstein's Pet Treat maker there is no need to buy mass manufactured pet treats anymore; in just three steps you can treat your pet with a delicious freshly baked snack," reads the release.

The machine makes 10 treats at a time and costs $24.99. Holstein spokesperson Natalie Correa says the Holstein Pet Treat Maker will be available in May.

Tuatara will chase 275 mph with 1,350 hp or more
Apr 29th 2013, 18:33

Not much has been seen or heard lately of SSC's upcoming Veyron-rival, the Tuatara, which has led to speculation that the project may have hit a roadblock.

According to the latest from SSC, however, development is progressing as scheduled and a major milestone recently reached.

That milestone was the completion of final testing and validation for the Tuatara's twin-turbocharged 7.0-liter V-8 engine.

Strapped to an engine dyno, the in-house developed V-8 easily reached SSC's performance target of 1,350 horsepower and 1,280 pound-feet of torque--on 91 octane gasoline bought at the pump.

To put that into perspective, the current land speed record holder, the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport, puts out only 1,183 horsepower.

But what's even more insane is that SSC is calling this only the standard output. The company says the engine is easily capable of over 1,700 horsepower, for those owners that "don't want or need to be buffered by regulations."

Some of the tests have included running the engine at 5,500 rpm and then adding huge loads, simulating the effects of suddenly encountering a steep hill. These kinds of tests are said to be much more strenuous on the engine than even when it travels at its theoretical top speed of 275 mph.

After the dyno testing was completed, the engine was torn down for internal inspection and all the components said to look as if they were new.

The engine has been tested in the real world, too. It has been installed in test mules for the Tuatara, hidden beneath the body of SSC's existing Ultimate Aero supercar. It powers the rear wheels only, via a seven-speed manual transmission or seven-speed sequential unit.

SSC has been developing the Tuatara for the past three years and claims that it is an amazingly docile package that could easily serve as daily driver. We'll have to reserve our own judgment until we finally hop behind the wheel.

"This amazingly versatile package has already shown that it can easily be driven on a daily basis in any climate or environment in the world and at the same time can roll out of the pit area onto a track like Nürburgring and easily handle any rigors that record will require," SSC founder Jerod Shelby said in a statement.

Unfortunately, there's been no mention of when the Tuatara will be ready for sale.

Budweiser unveils beer glass that connects to Facebook
Apr 29th 2013, 17:06

  • buddy_cup_youtube.jpg

Toasting with new friends just got a futuristic, and slightly creepy, upgrade.

Budweiser recently unveiled the "Buddy Cup," a pint glass with a built-in chip that connects to Facebook. The cup automatically connects people on Facebook when they clink glasses with another "Buddy Cup" user, creating a virtual friendship instantly.

The cup's promotional video shows the glass being tested in Brazil as images of drinkers enjoyably clinking pints flash across the screen.

"So, they just did the same as always: Went out drinking Bud, and making new friends," a male narrator announces in the company's commercial. "Buddy Cup: the more Buds, the more friends."

Feedback toward the Facebook-integrated glass has been mixed.

Tech blog BetaBeat writes, "In the olden times, clinking your beers together with a stranger was a sign of celebration—a mutual agreement that things were about to get weird. The fact that you'd never have to see them again or explain why you puked down the front of your shirt was a significant part of the appeal. Now, Budweiser is about to destroy that sacred experience with the introduction of the Buddy Cup."

Responses on Twitter highlight the creepy factor in sharing contact details with the clink of a glass.

"This is a bad idea, @Budweiser," writes ecarlson23. "I don't want my drunk life posted all over facebook."

Another user writes, "This is so wrong, in so many ways – Budweiser."

The cup was developed by advertising agency Agencia Africa in partnership with Bolha, a digital innovation studio in Sao Paulo. The idea was to create an interactive relationship between consumers and the product.

"Innovation is in Budweiser's DNA," Sergio Gordilho, chief creative officer at Agencia Africa, told The Drum. "Its platforms are constantly surprising consumers with the best there is in terms of premium experiences. The 'Buddy Cup' is another idea bringing the brand even closer to its consumers and opening new levels of interaction for them."

Toyota 4Runner bulks up for 2014

Toyota is doubling down on its small 4x4.

The 4Runner is getting a facelift for 2014 that features a chunkier look to emphasize the SUV's tough guy chops in a world that's quickly going soft.

With one time competitors like the Nissan Pathfinder and Ford Explorer transforming into crossovers in recent years, the 4Runner is one of the few midsize SUVs that still rides on a truck frame. Toyota's FJ Cruiser, the Nissan XTerra and Jeep Wrangler being the only others left in the class.

Along with a blocky, slotted new front fascia, the 4Runner gets a set of angry-eyes-shaped smoked headlight clusters and an aggressive skid plate-style front bumper. Inside, updated trim aims to add refinement and improve comfort throughout the cabin.

The mechanical bits carry over from last year, and still include a 270 hp 4.0-liter V6 and a hardcore 4x4 option with locking center differential and low-range transfer case.

Automakers have been shifting to crossover-based SUVs in recent years as buyers have gravitated toward their superior comfort and fuel economy compared to body-on-frame trucks like the 4Runner, which trails its competitors in both categories while aiming to offer a higher level of off road capability.

Of course, Toyota isn't sweating it. It has the strong-selling Highlander SUV to go up against the soft-roaders and still managed to move almost 50,000 4Runners last year.

Pricing for the 2014 4Runner will be announced closer to its on-sale date late this summer, but the 2013 model starts at $32,335.
