New Cummins V8 diesel detailed
Oct 7th 2013, 19:38

Cummins has revealed additional details about its upcoming diesel engine, recently announced as an option for the next generation Nissan Titan half-ton pickup.

The all-new 5.0 liter V8 will be available to other automakers, as well, and was designed to fit in practically any truck engineered to accommodate a V8 or V10 engine.

Several versions will be offered ranging from 200 hp to 275 hp with a maximum of 560 lb-ft of torque.

The ISV5.0 features a compacted graphite iron block, aluminum alloy heads, composite valve covers and dual overhead cams for reduced weight and smooth operation, according to Cummins, along with a variable geometry turbocharger, high-flow fuel filter and extensive exhaust treatment system that includes exhaust gas recirculation and diesel particulate filter. The company says it will improve fuel economy between 20 to 40 percent compared to gasoline engines, depending on its application.

While no other automakers have yet announced plans to use it, Cummins suggests it could be an option for school buses, motorhomes and delivery vehicles, as well as other pickups.

Ram currently offers a 6.7-liter inline-6-cylinder Cummins turbo-diesel in its heavy duty pickups, but is selling a light duty Ram 1500 with a 3.0-liter V6 rated at 240 hp and 420 lb-ft.

Production of the new engine begins in Columbus, Ind., at the end of 2014. Nissan has not yet confirmed when the new Nissan Titan will go on sale, but it is expected to be introduced for the 2015 model year.
