Website Vegan Sellout List outs, shames vegan 'traitors'
Jul 1st 2013, 16:07

A group of vegan extremists has launched a Web site meant to shame scores of "ex-vegans" — even posting the names and photos of the meat-munching traitors.

The The Vegan Sellout List, at exvegans.com, features a directory of former vegans, including plenty of New York City residents.

It says its mission is to hold responsible folks who eat animals and know better.

The site accuses the former non-meat-and-dairy eaters of once being vegans only to be trendy or to make friends.

"The spirits of the billions murdered have risen to deliver: The Vegan Sellout List," the site declares.

"The Vegan Sellout List is our answer to . . . those who are aware of the suffering caused by meat, dairy, egg, fur and leather production, yet choose to look away while the animals suffer," the site says, calling out "swarms of haughty, nose-turning carnists."

Jury awards victim $14 million in Hyundai air bag lawsuit
Jul 1st 2013, 16:40

A jury has awarded a Radford family more than $14 million in a lawsuit against Hyundai after a teenager sustained a brain injury in a 2010 car accident.

A Pulaski Circuit Court jury made the ruling Friday in the suit brought by the parents of Zachary Duncan.

The Roanoke Times reports Duncan was 16 when the 2008 Tiburon he was driving went off a road before striking a tree. His side air bag didn't deploy.

Family attorney Ari Casper argued air bag sensors in Tiburons from the 2003 to 2008 model years were in the wrong location and didn't accurately detect when the side air bag should deploy.

Hyundai attorney Harlan Prater testified the victim's injuries were caused by the roof, and that the car exceeded federal safety standards.

New Datsun revealed in sketches
Jul 1st 2013, 13:09

Nissan Motor Co.'s Datsun unit Monday revealed the sketches of the first car that the revived brand will launch in a global premiere in India this month.

Japan's Nissan restored the Datsun brand last year after it was discontinued nearly three decades ago, and plans to sell low-price cars under the brand in emerging markets.

Nissan Chief Executive Carlos Ghosn will be in India to unveil the first car from the Datsun brand on July 15, a sign of the importance of the Indian market, where small cars such as those that Datsun would sell make up three quarters of the 1.9 million cars sold in the last fiscal year that ended March 31.

Global auto makers expect the South Asian country to become one of the top markets for automobiles globally by the turn of the decade despite a current slowdown in the market. This optimism has led several companies to either set up new factories in India or expand their existing operations.

Datsun plans to introduce its subcompact hatchback in three emerging markets–India, Indonesia and Russia in early 2014, and in South Africa after that. In India, the cars would sell for the equivalent of between $3,000 and $5,000, which would put it in competition with products from Suzuki Motor Corp., Hyundai Motor Co., and General Motors Co.

Limited Premiere Edition Corvette Stingray announced
Jul 1st 2013, 14:12

This may be the ultimate road trip car, it even comes with luggage.

Chevrolet has announced that it is building a limited run of 500 Premiere Edition Corvette Stingrays to kick off production of the all-new seventh generation 'Vette.

Each car is painted Laguna Blue and fully loaded with the Z51 performance package, magnetic ride control suspension, 460 hp V8, dual-mode sport exhaust, exposed carbon fiber removable roof panel and several unique Premiere Edition touches including Brownstone sueded microfiber upholstery, a black hood stripe, Stingray logos on the wheel caps and sill plates, and a numbered plaque on the dashboard certifying the car's provenance.

A five-piece Corvette branded Thule luggage set rounds out the package. Good thing the liftback Corvette is one of the few supercars in the world that can carry that kind of baggage.

Pricing has not been announced, but a standard Stingray with all of the options boxes checked costs $73,360.

If you're interested, you'd better start hustling. All off the cars have already been allocated to Chevy's top Corvette dealers. One of them is NASCAR team owner Rick Hendrick, who also bought the rights to the first new Corvette off the line for $1,050,000 at a charity auction in January, and he can order it anyway he pleases.

For that kind of money, we'd hope so.

Return of the VW dune buggy?
Jul 1st 2013, 12:03

The Beetle is back, so why not the Bug…gy?

Autocar reports that Volkswagen has been granted a U.S. design patent on a dune buggy-style concept it revealed in 2011.

Based on the VW Up! subcompact, the Buggy Up! features an open top, two-seat body inspired by the classic Meyers Manx kit car, which is built on the platform of the original VW Beetle.

Although the Up! (yes, the exclamation point is part of the name) isn't currently sold in the United States, VW officials have said it could be federalized for U.S. sale.

Unlike the Beetle, the five-seat Up! is front-wheel-drive and powered by a 75 hp 1.0-liter four-cylinder engine.

The Buggy Up! does away with the rear seats and hatchback, in favor of a trunk with a luggage rack on top, and features a bikini-style fabric roof in keeping with the stripped-down theme.

Granted, the patent is good for 14 years, so it may be a while before you see one of these rolling down California's Highway 1, but good times could be on the way.

Car hits crowd, injures 17, at car show in Poland
Jul 1st 2013, 12:16

Authorities say a luxury sports car skidded into the crowd during a car show in Poland, injuring 17 people.

The Provincial Governor's Office in Poznan, western Poland, said in a statement Sunday that four people are in serious condition but their injuries are not life-threatening. Two children are among the injured.

The statement said the driver lost control on a straight stretch of road, broke through a barrier and hit the crowd. Prosecutors are investigating.

Polish agency PAP said the driver was Norwegian. The car was from Swedish specialty automaker Koenigsegg.

The accident took place during the ninth Gran Turismo Polonia show, in which drivers show off their rare sports cars.

Five of the 'official' classic cars of summer
Jun 30th 2013, 04:00

Summer is here in full-swing, and who wants to be insulated from it with air conditioning, satellite radio, pollen filters and dual-pane windows? Nope, you want to be smelling the exhaust fumes, listening to the tires chirp and enjoying the sight of a classic car in motion. Here are five of our nominees for the "official" classic car of summer:

  1. 1955-57 Chevrolet Bel Air Convertible: As the old ad copy goes, there's baseball, hot dogs, apple pie and Chevrolet. Few things are more quintessentially American than the aforementioned, and the "tri-five" Chevy Bel Airs built in 1955, 1956 and 1957 are their automotive equivalents. All are great years; the '55 is clean and understated and the '57 is finned and audacious, while the '56 falls somewhere in between. All were available with Chevrolet's brilliant new small-block V-8 in varying states of tune. A Bel Air convertible in Tropical Turquoise is the perfect summer day cruiser for you and four or five friends.
  2. 1963-67 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible: Just as iconic as the Bel Air but much sportier, the second generation or C2 Corvette served notice to the Europeans that the people who stormed the beaches at Normandy could damn well design a world-class sports car. Any year is spectacular; the 1963-64 cars sell for a bit of a discount because they have drum rather than disc brakes. The 1967 sells at a slight premium because it wasn't supposed to have happened at all (the all new C3 got pushed to 1968) and many perceive it to be the best of the C2s. Those looking for bargain-priced Corvette convertibles would do well to check out a C4 from the late 1980s or early 1990s. Look hard and you might find one of those for less than 10 grand.
  3. 1976-86 Jeep CJ-7: Another classic American with roots in the original Willys Jeep from WWII, the CJ-7 is best remembered by baby boomers and Gen-Xers for the flamboyant special editions that American Motors would create to stoke already impressive demand for what was in reality a fairly crude old vehicle. Today, few things say summer like a CJ with the doors removed and a dog with a bandana in the passenger seat.
  4. 1965-66 Ford Mustang: The Mustang celebrates the big 5-0 next year, but in advance of that, we'd like to remind the classic car world that few cars are as satisfying to own as a first-generation Mustang. They seat four people comfortably, even the six-cylinder cars can keep up with modern traffic and they're drop-dead beautiful. Our choice for the ultimate summer 'Stang? A GT convertible with the 270 hp high performance V-8, styled steel wheels and a four-speed.
  5. 1962-80 MGB: Well it may not be American, but MG was the sports car America loved first according to the ads. The MGB was the last car sold in the U.S. under the famous MG brand, and in spite of various rumors and false starts, it looks like it will stay that way. Not the fastest or the best-handling sports cars of all time, the MGB was simple, far better built than most people realize and actually quite reliable (most of the problems with their infamous British electrical systems were caused by tinkerers trying to "improve" things). MGBs are still common, parts are in better supply than they were when the cars were new and few things offer more pleasure on a twisty road on a warm summer day.
