Third fire in Tesla Model S reported
Nov 7th 2013, 17:12

Another Tesla Model S electric car has caught fire, this time after hitting road debris outside of Smyrna, Tennessee.

The blaze on Wednesday afternoon engulfed the front of the car. A spokeswoman for the Tennessee Highway Patrol says the Model S was headed east on Interstate 24 when it ran over a tow hitch. The hitch hit the undercarriage of the car, causing an electrical fire.

It's the third fire in a Model S in the past five weeks and similar to one in early October just outside of Seattle. In that fire, a driver hit road debris that pierced a shield and the battery pack, causing a fire. The other blaze happened in Mexico after the driver ran over a roundabout and crashed into a concrete wall and a tree at a high speed.

The Model S, which starts at $70,000, can go up to 265 miles on a single charge.

In the Tennessee case, the driver was able to pull onto an emergency lane. No one was hurt.

Tesla says the fire was not spontaneous. Spokeswoman Liz Jarvis Shean says Tesla has sent a team to Tennessee to investigate the fire. She says the company has been in contact with the driver, who believes the car saved his life.

The fire burned the front of the car, according to pictures posted on the Jalopnik.com and Valuewalk.com websites.

Shares of the carmaker, based in Palo Alto, Calif., fell 7 percent Thursday morning to $140.63.

The high-flying stock had risen in value by more than 400 percent earlier in the year, but fell this week after some analysts found its third-quarter earnings disappointing. Concerns about a battery shortage, as well as the costs Tesla will incur as it builds more cars, spooked some investors.

FOXNews.com: Fans make a run for Heady Topper beer as retail outlet is shuttered

Fans make a run for Heady Topper beer as retail outlet is shuttered
Nov 6th 2013, 21:45

A popular Vermont beer is in such high demand that its makers are shuttering their retail operation to head off the trouble brewing with its neighbors.

Customers lined up at The Alchemist brewery on Tuesday to buy cases of Heady Topper, the double IPA that Beer Advocate magazine recently ranked No. 1 out of the top 250 beers in the world.

The hoppy concoction is so popular — sales have grown from 30 barrels a week to 180 a week in the two years since the brewery opened on the outskirts of Waterbury — that owners Jen and John Kimmich plan to close their retail operation on November 15 to appease nearby residents.

"We've had complaints from neighbors," Jen Kimmich said. "We would have had to fight to keep on going. ... We decided to close down before it turns into a large legal battle."

The couple plan to reopen the retail outlet as soon as possible and is looking for other locations in Waterbury, Kimmich said. While the retail end is closing for now, the brewery will continue operating and keep its staff of 25, she said.

Heady Topper's reputation exceeds its production levels. The brewery sells 180 barrels a week compared with the 30 it sold about two years ago — but either way, it's a drop in the bucket compared with the 200 million barrels of beer produced in the U.S. each year.

While grieving customers crashed the Heady Topper website Tuesday afternoon, it drew a big sigh of relief from Amy Kinsell, who owns the house next door to the brewery.

"The busier they've gotten, the more chaotic my life has gotten," she said on her front porch. She said other neighbors had complained as well.

Beer lovers can be more boisterous than considerate at times. The driveway at the Kimmichs' business is easy to miss, and Kinsell said there was one half-hour period last summer when 26 people turned around in her driveway.

When she parked a vehicle across the entrance to her driveway to slow that traffic down, people turned around on her grass, she said. Then there were the smoke and odors from the brewery's operations, and noise from the refrigerated trucks in its backyard.

There was no drowning her sorrows in her neighbor's product, Kinsell said.

"I'm not a beer drinker, not a fan of any beer."

The Alchemist has become a jewel in the frothy crown of Vermont microbreweries that had spawned a new sort of beer tourism, in which connoisseurs from around the world come to sample prize-winning brews of Lawson's Finest Liquids in Waitsfield, the Shed in Stowe, Hill Farmstead in Greensboro and others.

The notion of even a temporary closure disappointed fans stopping by the shop Tuesday.

"It's a sad situation, it really is," said Andy McLenithan, of Manchester in southern Vermont, who with his co-worker Scott Senecal had driven an hour out of his way on a trip home from building a baseball diamond in St. Johnsbury to stop at the Waterbury brewery.

FOXNews.com: Bride makes gruesome severed head wedding cake

Bride makes gruesome severed head wedding cake
Nov 6th 2013, 20:34

How's this for a great start to a marriage.

A cake maker designed her own wedding cake that she sculpted to look like her and her husband's severed heads.  The decapitated heads, lying on their sides, had blank soulless eyes and were sitting in a pool of blood.  Below the heads was the phrase, "Till Death Do Us Part."

Natalie Sideserf, 28, owner of Sideserf Cake Studio said she spent about 40 hours creating the killer treat for her and husband Dave's movie-themed Austin, Tex. wedding.

"I was heavily influenced by the Halloween season, my husband's love for horror movies, and the venue which was the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema," she told FoxNews.com in and email. "While we do a vast array of different cake designs for our customers, hyperrealism has been one of my favorite subjects so the thought of doing our severed heads was a no-brainer (no pun intended)."

Inside was confetti vanilla cake that showed its multi-colors when cut into.  It was topped with vanilla buttercream frosting and modeling chocolate –lots of it.

This isn't the only cake Sideserf has made that's captured national headlines.

Earlier this year she made a cake in the eerie likeness of singer Willie Nelson.  A picture of that cake, posted on Reddit, went viral on social media and won her several baking awards.  She later made a cake of comedians Jim Gaffigan, Chelsea Peretti, Dana Carvey, and Bill Hader styled after Mount Rushmore for Austin's Moontower Comedy Festival.

As far as Sideserf's own wedding cake is concerned, she said that her guests were shocked when it was brought out but ultimately her creation was a big hit with everyone --expect her grandmother.

FOXNews.com: This drink, for $176, comes with a ride in a sports car

This drink, for $176, comes with a ride in a sports car
Nov 6th 2013, 19:05

We all know that drink prices are on the rise, although we don't think it's always justified. But this drink, with an eye-popping price tag of $176, just may be worth it.

Gothamist reports that the bar at New York City's Langham Place hotel has a drink called the Quattroporte (yes, like the Maserati).  It's made the Italian aperitif Aperol, the digestive Amaro Nonino, Plymouth Gin and some pricey Krug Champagne.  After gulping down the drink, you can request that the hotel staff take you on a spin around Manhattan in an actual Maserati Quattroporte.

The car is capable of going 176 mph, which is how the hotel came up with the price point, but don't expect the driver to go full throttle on Fifth Avenue.

The cocktail must be ordered one day in advance, and it's only available in November, so you better hurry.

Nebraska man's stolen motorcycle found after 46 years
Nov 6th 2013, 19:45

OMAHA, Neb. –  Donald DeVault wonders what kind of memories his Triumph motorcycle helped make in the 46 years since it was stolen.

The 73-year-old Omaha man learned last week that California authorities had recovered his 1953 Triumph Tiger 100 at the Port of Los Angeles. The bike was about to be shipped to Japan when customs agents who checked the vehicle identification number discovered it had been reported stolen in February 1967.

DeVault says he's talked about the motorcycle over the years. He recalls Marlon Brando riding a similar bike in the movie "The Wild One."

Once he gets it back, DeVault plans to have someone restore the bike's name and paint "46 Years Later" on the gas tank.

The bike was valued at $300 in 1967. Today, it's worth about $9,000.

Dodge brings back 'Shaker' hood on Challenger muscle car
Nov 6th 2013, 19:53

Now about those Holley carbs.

Dodge is bringing back the legendary "Shaker" hood on the 2014 Challenger.

Just like the old days, the engine-mounted cold air intake scoop pokes through a hole in the hood and vibrates along with the 5.7-liter Hemi V8 it's matched to.

Available on the new Challenger R/T Shaker model, the scoop comes matched to the Super Track Pack, which includes a retuned suspension and steering, more potent brakes and high performance tires. A matte-black hood, unique trim and Shaker logos all over the car further differentiate it from other Challengers.

Along with the standard production model, Dodge is also offering 100 Shaker hood Challengers modified by Mopar for 2014 that are equipped with a slew of functional and cosmetic accessories from the Mopar catalog.

The Challenger R/T Shaker goes on sale early next year for $36,995 with the Mopar 2014 Challenger following in the spring at a yet to be announced price.

Toyota designs a stand-up car
Nov 5th 2013, 20:50

Hang ten, dude!

On the highway?

Toyota is unveiling a vehicle at the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show that is driven while standing up.

Like a Segway on steroids, the FV2 was designed to be controlled by body motions. There isn't a steering wheel or handlebars, the driver just shifts his or her weight to change direction or speed.

While it also doesn't have seatbelts, the FV2 is envisioned to be tapped into an intelligent transport system that will allow it to monitor other vehicles in the vicinity and alter its driver to any potential hazards and autonomously take evasive action.

It can also read minds, or at least moods, and adjust itself accordingly while suggesting potential destinations. When it gets where it's going, the windshield folds down to secure the vehicle as it enters sleep mode.

No, it won't be replacing the Camry anytime soon, but…well, there is no but. It's just wild.
