Liz Taylor's Continental a dazzler
Nov 29th 2012, 15:00

If only "Liz and Dick" were this good.

A 1956 Continental Mark II once owned by Elizabeth Taylor made a rare appearance on the Lincoln stand at the Los Angeles Auto Show this week, and it dazzled the crowd as well as its former owner would have if she walked through the door.

The elegant two-door was a gift to the star from the Warner Bros. studio and specially finished in custom paint matched to the color of Taylor's eyes and a two-tone interior with the same hue over white. Now owned by Robert and Nancy Ratinoff of Sherman Oaks, Calif., it sports license plates with the name "Lizzie" on them. According to The Hollywood Reporter, this is the first time it's been on public display since 1980.

Although Continentals were sold as a standalone brand at the time, the car shares many of its underpinnings with contemporary Lincolns, including its 285 hp 368-cubic-foot V8.

With a price tag of $10,000, the largely hand-built hardtops were the most expensive American cars of the day, but the company still managed to lose money on every one of them, finally leading to the Continental's turn as a slightly less premium model under the Lincoln umbrella.

2014 Chevy Corvette test drive?
Nov 29th 2012, 15:13

The 2014 Chevrolet Corvette will be making its world debut in January, but the first test drives of the car won't be available until the sales launch later in 2013. If, like us, you just can't wait, dust off your PlayStation 3 or visit a friend that owns one and get ready to test drive the car in the virtual world.

A disguised prototype for the new C7 Corvette is available for download in Gran Turismo 5, the latest version of the popular--and lifelike--PlayStation racing simulator.

It can be downloaded now from the PlayStation Store for free. Once installed, it can be driven on some of the world's renowned race tracks, including Daytona International Speedway and the infamous Nürburgring--tracks used by GM engineers while developing the real thing.

Like it does for every car featured in Gran Turismo, Polyphony Digital, the creator of the series, has gone to great length to ensure the performance of the virtual Corvette is as close as possible to the real thing.

During the creation of the virtual Corvette, careful attention was paid to the tiniest details, from the creases and wrinkles in the soft camouflage used to disguise the new design to specific driving characteristics that are currently being tuned and refined ahead of the vehicle's debut.

The announcement of the downloadable Corvette prototype was made at this week's 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show, where GM North American president Mark Reuss was one of the first to test the virtual Corvette.

As previously reported, the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette will be revealed on January 13 at a special event preceding the 2013 Detroit Auto Show. The new C7 will be slightly smaller than the outgoing C6, representing a sharper and more focused design for the American icon, and its brand new LT1 V-8 engine will offer more power.

With a power rating of 450 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque, the LT1 is estimated to be capable of delivering 0-60 mph times of less than 4.0 seconds and a top speed in excess of 186 mph--in the standard model!

While you wait for its arrival, be sure to check out our previous spy shots.

FOXNews.com: The bourbon that you can't get your hands on

The bourbon that you can't get your hands on
Nov 29th 2012, 14:06

Pappy Van Winkle bourbon may as well be liquid gold.

The hot present this holiday is this rare, small-batch whiskey from the Kentucky-based Old Rip Van Winkle distillery. The barrel-aged spirit has gained a cult following, and  -- while demand has exploded -- supply has remained the same: a mere 7,000 cases a year.

In New York, one bottle essentially has waiting lists upon waiting lists. One Ohio liquor store owner says she calls customers on the waiting list even before the whiskey hits the shelf.

While the distillery suggests the 10-year, 15-year and 23-year bourbons sell for $40, $80 and $250 respectively, bottles regularly go for $500-plus on eBay.

You can search OldRipVanWinkle.com to see if a retailer near you carries the bourbon, but even the website acknowledges that your efforts may be in vain.

"Due to the extremely limited nature of our products we cannot guarantee that retailers will have inventory at any one time," the website says.  "This list is comprised of retailers who have requested that they be added to our site."

So, what's the deal with Pappy Van Winkle?

For one, the bourbons are made with corn, wheat and barley, rather than the traditional blend of corn, rye and barley. This so-called "wheated" bourbon is said to have a softer, smoother taste.  It also doesn't help that store owners are encountering more people who don't know anything about Van Winkle except that others want it.

Word of mouth, celebrity chef fans and bourbon blog chatter have contributed to the cult following of this aged bourbon.

But is it really that good? Mark Casey, the creator of the forthcoming documentary "Chasing Pappy," told the Post about his first experience with the bourbon.

"[It delivered] everything I like about bourbon, only richer and more saturated," he said.

Others, however, haven't been swept away in the hype.

"It's a good bourbon, it's not a life-changing experience," Paul Bressler, the spirits buyer at 67 Wine and Spirits on Manhattan's Upper West Side, told the Post.

Chevy Volt named most satisfying car
Nov 29th 2012, 14:41

Where's the love?

For the Chevrolet Volt it's right at home.

The plug-in hybrid topped the Consumer Reports annual customer satisfaction survey for the second straight year, with 92 percent of owners saying they would definitely buy it again, down from 93 percent in 2011.

The magazine says the showing was the result of a growing trend of enthusiasm for fuel-efficient cars, and in the case of the Volt, "the combination of sporty handling and strong engine performance also goes a long way in building loyalty and generating excitement among owners."

350,000 people were surveyed, and of the top 44 cars, 16 were American, 14 Asian and 14 European.

Other high scoring fuel-efficient vehicles included the Toyota Camry Hybrid, Prius, Prius C and the Nissan Leaf electric car.

Nissan didn't fare as well at the other end of the list. Its Versa sedan, currently the cheapest car on sale in the United States, came in dead last, with less than half of its owners saying they'd take it for another spin.

FOXNews.com: Best wine picks for 2012

Best wine picks for 2012
Nov 28th 2012, 17:15

Football fans wait all year for the Super Bowl. Tennis buffs live for the U.S. Open. But wine lovers, both vintners and drinkers alike, wait on bated breath for Wine Spectator Magazine's Top 100 wine list.

And with global readership of about 3.5 million, there's a lot of people waiting.

Well its out!  And Wine of the Year for 2012? Shafer Vineyards "Relentless" Napa Valley 2008. (The 2008 is no longer available but the 2009 Relentless scored just as high.) The entire list is available at WineSpectator.com.

So how'd they did they select it?

Wine Spectator's seven senior editors, plus owner Marvin R. Shanken, reviewed more than 17,000 wines in 2012, all in blind tastings. About 5,500 of them earned scores of 90 points or higher, according to Thomas Matthews, executive editor of the magazine and a member of the panel.

"From these, we looked for wines that paired high scores, low prices, availability and also delivered something extra that got us excited," said Matthews.  That's essentially the "wow" factor.

So the Relentless truly wow-ed them. But the whole list, which they started in 1988, has that "wow" factor. Thirteen different countries are represented on the list and 35 wines are $25 or less; 16 are $18 or less.

Unfortunately, many of these wines are no longer available because it's on the list of wines "that got us most excited during the previous year," says Matthews.

"We hope it will stimulate our readers to think about the wines that got them excited."

So check out the list.  And then tell me what wines you drank last year that got you excited.

Cent 'Anni.

What is your death row wine?

1953 Chateau Mouton-Rothschild Paulliac (from Bordeaux). This is my birth year, from a winery whose owner, Baroness Philippine de Rothschild, is one of my mentors in the wine business. I've had the wine on several occasions, all of which remain as landmark memories. It would bring my whole life back in a happy flash.

What is the best wine and food pairing you've ever had? (or had recently)

In 1978 I was living in Spain and traveled to Morocco for a month. It was a strange and scary place and made a deep impression on me. The day I returned I got on a train and bought a garlic sausage and a bottle of Rioja for my lunch – cost, about $4. It tasted like Spain; it was delicious; I was home, safe and sound after a grand adventure. I've never forgotten the tastes, or the feeling.

What are three major wine trends will be see in the in the next 10 years?

Diversity: more wine regions will produce wines from more grapes than ever before. We are spoiled for choice.

Value: while the very top wines are out of reach for most people (2009 Chateau Mouton-Rothschild was released for $1,000), there are an increasing number of fine values. In 2012, we reviewed nearly 5,000 wines that scored 85 points or higher and cost $25 or less; that's about 1/3 of all our reviews.

Sustainability: More and more wineries will farm their vineyards organically or sustainably, and will build wineries that save energy, reduce carbon footprints and minimize environmental impacts.

FOXNews.com: Toyota unveils all-new Rav4

Toyota unveils all-new Rav4
Nov 28th 2012, 19:22

The Toyota RAV4 is getting a makeover that could help it retake the crossover crown.

The RAV4 was the first crossover when it went on sale in 1995, and it became a hit with families who wanted the roominess of an SUV with the tighter handling of a car. But as dozens of imitators entered the market offering more power, styling or technology for the price, the pioneering RAV4 was gradually overtaken.

The current version is now the fourth best-selling crossover in the U.S., behind the more recently redesigned Honda CR-V, Ford Escape and Chevrolet Equinox. The RAV4 was last redesigned in 2006.

Now, Toyota hopes its revamped 2013 RAV4 can reclaim the top sales spot. The crossover has a sharper, more muscular look than the boxier outgoing model. It also has a redesigned interior and better fuel economy. It debuts Wednesday at the Los Angeles Auto Show and will go on sale early next year.

Here are some more details about the fourth-generation RAV4.

UNDER THE HOOD: Toyota will carry over the 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine from the current RAV4. It gets 176 horsepower, down from 179 in the current model because Toyota had to meet more stringent emissions standards. It will be paired with a new six-speed transmission, which replaces the four-speed on the current model. The new transmission helps it achieve an estimated 24 miles per gallon in the city and 31 on the highway, up from 22 and 28. Toyota will no longer offer a V6 engine.

INSIDE: The main difference here is that Toyota will no longer offer an optional third-row seat, which had expanded the RAV4's capacity to seven. But second-row passengers will have more leg room thanks to thinner front seats. The cargo area is also longer and deeper than the previous model. When the second row is folded down, the RAV4 boasts 73.4 cubic feet of cargo space, which is more than the CR-V or Escape. A backup camera is now standard on every trim level, as it is on the CR-V.

OUTSIDE: The design is more sculpted and dramatic than the current RAV4, with a sloping hood and more prominent front and rear fenders. Toyota is introducing a roof-hinged liftgate on the new RAV4, a break from its previous side-hinged rear doors. The company says the new liftgate will make the vehicle easier to load from a curb. The new RAV4 will also be the first Toyota to have a system that automatically shifts from front wheel drive to all wheel drive when the vehicle is accelerating or when it detects wheel slippage.

PRICE: Not yet released, but expect it to be in the $22,500 to $23,000 range in this hotly contested and crowded segment of the market.

CHEERS: It's a long overdue makeover for a major player in the market and will most certainly increase sales. Toyota has sold more than 1.7 million RAV4s over the last 17 years.

JEERS: The CR-V and Escape still offer more horsepower and gee-whiz features, like the automatic liftgate on the Escape that opens with a wave of a driver's foot. The Chevrolet Equinox gets better highway fuel economy. The RAV4 will still have a tough time competing.

FOXNews.com: Starbucks sells a $7 cup of coffee

Starbucks sells a $7 cup of coffee
Nov 28th 2012, 16:26

Would you pay $7 for a cup of Starbucks coffee --black?

That's what the giant coffee chain is betting on for a taste of its rare Costa Rica Finca Palmilera beans known as Geisha and called the "champion of coffee varietals" by artisanal roaster Stumptown. The beans, the most expensive the company sells, are found in Central America and are notoriously difficult to grow, reports SeattlePi.

Coffee lovers can only get it 48 Starbucks stores with a Clover machine in the Pacific Northwest.  Half of the stores are based in Seattle. The rest of Americans will just have to wait it out until next year when Starbucks plans to take the beans to stores nationwide.

A half-pound bag of Starbuck's Finca Palmilera beans is currently selling online for $40 a bag. Well, it was selling for that – the beans sold out within 24 hours.

So does the coffee really taste any different?  In Jimmy Kimmel's latest skit, the answer is, well, no.

His show took to the streets to conduct a "taste test" outside of Starbucks that serves the new coffee. Comments about the new brew included "richer taste" and "smoother flavor."  But the joke was on them. The pot was filled with the same coffee --and nary a Geisha insight. Maybe the taste buds need to be trained to appreciate the rare brew.

Have a look at the video.
