Ford GT hits record 278 mph in Texas Mile
Oct 29th 2013, 17:33

A modified Ford GT has broken the Texas Mile speed record, again.

The M2K Motorsports GT reached 278 mph over one mile from a standing start, making it the fastest vehicle ever to run at the semiannual Texas speed fest.

The previous record of 267.6 mph was set by the same car in the hands of Hennessey Performance. Prior to that, Hennessey set records of 263.3 mph and 257.7 mph with the car.

How does this Ford GT do it?

While the Hennessey/M2K GT is street legal, it's powered by a purpose-built twin-turbocharged Accufab Racing V-8.

Evo reports that the GT was putting out around 2,000 horsepower during its record run, compared to 500 hp for a stock GT.

The Texas Mile is the perfect place to unleash it. The event is held on an airport runway in Beeville, Texas purely to allow drivers of souped-up cars like the GT--or a twin-turbocharged Lamborghini Gallardo--to see what their machines can do.

While outrunning a Bugatti Veyron is safer on a closed airstrip, there's still a bit of danger. Abrupt cross winds can make cars much harder to control at speed.

However, the M2K GT isn't the fastest car over a standing mile, or even the fastest Ford GT. Both of those distinctions go to the Performance Power Racing Ford GT, which hit 283 mph in 2012, as certified by Guinness.

Deep-fried Twinkie Burger makes its heart-stopping debut
Oct 29th 2013, 16:11

After the donut, mac & cheese and ramen-bun burgers, we thought we'd seen it all.

But Philadelphia's PYT –the same place that brought us the deep-fried lasagna burger and the bacon taco burger -- has just released the latest in a line of over-the-top sandwiches.

"At PYT, we don't want to have those conversations (about calories). This is an escape."

- Malcolm Kenyatta, PYT manager

Behold the Deep-Fried Twinkie Burger.  It's a beef and pork belly patty topped with American cheese and crispy bacon, then placed between two patties made with deep-fried Twinkies.

PYT manager Malcolm Kenyatta said the eatery, famous for its strange and potentially heart-stopping burgers, comes up with a different burger every week -- and this is one was quiet literally a piece of cake.

"This Sunday, someone brought in Twinkies and the owner said let's deep fry these," he said, adding that the recipe didn't require much testing.

As far as the taste, think tooth-aching-sweet Twinkies mixing with the saltiness of the pork and cheese, making for a sweet and savory flavor combination.

When asked how many calories the Deep-Fried Twinkie Burger has, Kenyatta simply said, "At PYT, we don't want to have those conversations. This is an escape."

If you're among the first 15 people to order the heart-clogging treat, you'll get a chance to try it free today.  Afterward, they'll be on sale for $12.  But don't wait; this burger will only be around for a limited time.

Sandy-damaged cars sit on lots, awaiting unwitting buyers
Oct 29th 2013, 10:00

More than a quarter of a million cars and trucks were damaged during Superstorm Sandy, and many of them are back on the road or on used car lots a year later, posing a possible threat to unsuspecting shoppers.

According to vehicle history report provider Carfax, it's not uncommon for 50 percent of the cars affected by floods to return to service, some requiring only minor repairs, others a full overhaul.

But the most severely damaged vehicles, those declared salvaged by their insurance carriers, can put used car shoppers at risk, as less reputable dealers try to sell them without full disclosure, or through outright fraud.

These cars are typically unloaded at auctions to be used for parts, or exported to countries with lower safety standards than the U.S. They can, however, be repaired and issued clearly-marked "salvage" titles that must remain with them for the rest of their operational lives.

That is, of course, if the parties involved have gone through the proper channels. According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB,) it's not uncommon for shady operators to go to states with less restrictive regulations governing vehicle registrations to score clean titles for their dirty cars, then return to sell them to unsuspecting customers.

These transactions often take place through classified ads or on street corners, but sometimes at otherwise legitimate looking car dealerships. Unfortunately, it's usually up to the customer to sniff out a raw deal. Both Carfax and NICB provide free online Vehicle Identification Number searches that will tell you if a vehicle has ever been reported as flood damaged, regardless of its latest title, although this only applies to vehicles for which an insurance claim was made.

NICB currently has dozens of active investigations nationwide related to Sandy, but says that issues often aren't uncovered until the vehicles are involved in another incident. Consumer protection agencies in New York and New Jersey, the two states hardest hit by the storm, report receiving only a handful of complaints about scams, so far. But a Carfax spokesperson says victims are often too embarrassed to report this kind of activity, and that it could be more widespread than in first appears.

A representative for the New York Attorney General's office would not comment on any specific investigations, but said the agency is actively monitoring the situation.

Along with the financial and legal hassles that can go along with buying an improperly registered vehicle, flood-damaged cars present several potential safety and health hazards to passengers including faulty electrical systems that can lead to stalling and fires, as well as persistent mold and bacteria infestation.

Experts agree that if a deal on a car seems to good, it probably is, and it's worth putting in the due diligence before you buy.

Along with getting a history report, AAA offers several suggestions for spotting a flood-damaged vehicle like damp or musty odors; signs of mud or dirt in hard to reach areas, particularly on an otherwise very clean car; rust or corrosion on newer vehicles; and any obvious electrical glitches.

And as with any used car, if you're not sure about it, AAA recommends bringing it to a professional mechanic for an inspection. If the person or shop selling it to you is on the up and up, they won't mind at all. If they do, that could be the best sign that you're about to enter a bad deal.

Burger King says Satisfries are really satisfying
Oct 29th 2013, 11:18

Burger King says it's attracting more customers with its new lower-calorie fries but is being careful not to call them a home run yet.

The Miami-based company said Monday that it saw sales trends in North America turn positive after last month's launch of "Satisfries," which have 20 percent fewer calories than its regular fries because of a batter that absorbs less oil.

"It brought in incremental consumers who would otherwise not have come into Burger King," said Alex Macedo, the chain's president of North American operations. He noted that other promotions also played a role in improving sales and stressed that the economic climate nevertheless remained challenging.

The move into positive sales territory in October comes after Burger King said that sales slipped 0.3 percent at North America restaurants open at least a year during its third quarter. Satisfries, which cost around 30 cents more than regular fries, weren't introduced until the last week of the quarter, which ended Sept. 30.

The company blamed the quarterly sales dip on intensifying competition and a soft economy. Its net income rose sharply, however, as a result of reduced restaurant expenses and growth overseas.

Executives at McDonald's have also been blaming weak sales on the double whammy of heightened competition and a choppy economy. But other chains such as Chipotle and Starbucks have reported healthy sales, suggesting people are willing to spend on certain types of food and drinks.

As they fight to keep drawing in customers, McDonald's, Burger King and Wendy's have pushed deals more aggressively. Macedo noted that Burger King's deals are designed to maintain profit margins. A deal that offers two sandwiches for $5, for example, on average gets people to spend about $9 when including sides and drinks, he said.

As for Satisfries, the initial increase in customer visits Burger King saw may be tied to the fanfare and promotions around the launch. McCain Foods, which supplies the fries, has said it plans to work with other restaurant operators to sell the reduced-calorie fries.

"They've only been out there for four weeks, so it's premature to say whether it's a home run or not," Macedo said. Either way, he noted that they weren't going to "turn around the business."

Robot gas pumps ready to fill your tank
Oct 28th 2013, 17:46

Face it, American driver, you will soon be obsolete.

As the advent of autonomous cars approaches so comes the robot gas station attendant.

Working in conjunction with Sweden's Fuelmatics, industrial fueling products giant Husky Corporation has developed an automatic refueling system that could redefine the term "self serve" and send the last of the gas jockeys to the unemployment line.

The robotic pump uses cameras to locate the fuel door on the vehicle, which it opens with a suction cup, and guide the nozzle into the hole.

A magnetic reed switch then interacts with a special capless fuel filler installed on the car to determine when it has been inserted far enough to begin fueling.

The pump begins positioning itself as soon as the customer starts entering their payment information into the system, saving time in the refueling process.

Similar devices have been tested over the years, but the electronics weren't quite ready for prime time.

Husky expects this one to enter commercial operation within six months, and be particularly popular in bad weather markets, although launch locations have not yet been announced.

Wherever it ends up, customers interested in using it will need to buy one of the fillers for about $5.00 to make their car compatible with the system.

Husky says its tests show that 90-95 percent of the cars on the road should work with it, save for those with fuel doors in odd locations like behind the license plate or the nearly horizontal type found on cars like the Lamborghini Aventador.

Owners of such cars will just have to pay someone to get out and do it for them the old fashioned way.

Stinks to be them.

Lexus, Toyota top auto reliability survey
Oct 28th 2013, 19:03

Japan's lock on Consumer Reports' vehicle reliability rankings is starting to ease.

Three Japanese brands — Lexus, Toyota and Acura — took the top spots in this year's survey, and seven of the top 10 brands are Japanese.

But three non-Japanese brands — Audi, Volvo and GMC — cracked the top 10. And the magazine announced Monday it's not recommending that consumers buy 2014 models of the Honda Accord V6 and Nissan Altima sedans, two of Japan's top sellers, because of poor reliability scores. Two other Japanese mainstays, the Toyota Camry and Toyota RAV4, won't be recommended because they flunked a frontal crash test from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

That's a blow that could impact sales. Consumer Reports' recommendations are frequently cited among the top reasons people buy particular cars and trucks.

Yonkers, N.Y.-based Consumer Reports predicts the reliability of 2014 model year cars and trucks based on a survey of subscribers who own vehicles from current or prior model years. This year, the survey questioned the owners of 1.1 million vehicles.

Problems with infotainment systems, from frozen touch screens to poorly performing voice-operated navigation systems, were frequent complaints. Jake Fisher, Consumer Reports' automotive testing director, said electronic problems may even be underreported, since some drivers find the systems so confusing they don't use them. German cars tended to have the best infotainment systems.

The 2014 Subaru Forester got the top score for predicted reliability, but the magazine noted that the 2014 Forester had only been on sale for a few weeks in the spring when owners were surveyed, so there wasn't much time for errors to crop up. The Subaru Legacy was the top-performing midsize car.

Electric cars and hybrids generally performed well, but the Ford C-Max Energi plug-in hybrid got the worst reliability scores. Ford and its luxury Lincoln brand were near the bottom of the rankings because of customer complaints about their glitch-prone touchscreen dashboard systems and lower-than-expected fuel economy numbers.

The key to reliability is a conservative approach to vehicle redesigns. The brands that do best, like Toyota and Honda, often use time-tested engines, transmissions and other parts from prior models in their newer cars, Fisher said. Automakers with new engines or other untested features in their new cars — like Ford or Cadillac — tend to do worse.

"When you redesign cars from the ground up, you're going to expect those issues," Fisher told The Associated Press.

Brands with many older models, like GMC and Volvo, also tend to do better.

Understanding cognac and its growing cool factor
Oct 28th 2013, 14:31

Is cognac having its moment?

At a recent cocktail competition in New York City sponsored by the 158-year-old cognac company Louis Royer, master selector and fifth generation producer Jermone Royer happily wriggled his dark mustache as he sipped a concoction made with one of his newer releases: Force 53, a high-proof cognac created especially for bartenders.

Watching the birth of new creations with Royer's old spirit, it was easy to wonder if his ancestors could have predicted that this cognac -- made in the tiny French town of Jarnac (population 5,000)  -- would be all the rage in a thumping metropolis thousands of miles away?

Maybe not.  Things have changed quite a bit since the 1850s.

Today, cognac is in such demand that France exports 97 percent of the stuff to other countries.  The U.S. is the largest importer, consuming 3.9 million 9-liter cases of the brown-hued spirit in 2012 alone, according to data from the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States. That's followed by China and Russia --two countries snapping up a host of high-priced luxury items.

While Americans drink more wine and beer, cognac's perceived exclusiveness has helped instill it as a drink for the rich and fabulous. Busta Rhymes and P. Diddy's sang about it in their hit song, "Pass the Courvoisier" --and Ludacris, Snoop Lion, and Jay Z have their own cognac brands.

But while you may equate cognac with a certain high mark of quality, slid into silvery gift bags around the holiday season, have you ever found yourself asking: What is it, exactly?

First off, cognac is always brandy – but brandy is not always cognac. Far from a Sphinx-like riddle, this is just a simple fact of geography, among other particulars that must be adhered to when producing the slow-sipping spirit.

To be called cognac, the brandy – a spirit distilled from fermented grapes -- must be made within one of the six spots of the Cognac region: Bols Ordinaire, Bons Bois, Fins Bois, Borderies, Petite Champagne, and Grande Champagne. (The latter should not to be confused with the bubbly stuff further north. Think of it like Brooklyn, N.Y. and Brooklyn, Miss. – same name, totally different place.)

Similar to the concept of Scotch whisky, cognac is also a blend of many eau du vie (or water of life, as brandy is sometimes referred).

And have you ever noticed all those myriad letters on the bottles: VS, VSOP, for example? That's another key to cognac – age. Cognac must be matured in oak barrels for at least two years, but in all likelihood much longer than that.  The longer it ages, the more it's worth. So VS (e.g., "Very Special") means the youngest spirit in the mix was by law a minimum of two-years old, although it quite possibly may be older; VSOP ("Very Superior Old Pale) means the youngest spirit was lingering in a barrel for four years; XO ("Extra Old") indicates a minimum of six. The label Napoleon is simply a designation created by cognac maker Courvoisier, as a nod to the general who was so fond of its spirit, and will in all likelihood be a minimum of four years for the youngest brandy in the mix.

Prices vary, depending on the quality.  Some start as low as $30, while bottles of some super-premium cognac, like Louis XIII from Remy Martin -- that spend decades in barrel -- can fetch in the tens of thousands of dollars.

However, you don't need to take out a second mortgage on your home to enjoy a really nice glass of cognac. Many of the VSOPs clock in at around $40 and up, and are deliciously decadent sipped neat or with an ice cube or two.

And thanks to its rise in hip-hop culture, cognac is more accessible than ever with products like Chateau du Cognac's D'Usse, Courvoisier's Exclusif, Hennessy VS or Martell's Noblige or the newly released Caratèrea.

The night of Royer's Manhattan gathering, Jermone Royer passed out prizes for cocktails created by local bars.  There was a two-way tie for the Grand Prize winners:  Amor y Amargo's bartender Sother Teague and her drink called Orchard and The Wayside by the Dead Rabbit's Pamela Winznitzer.

"We need to like life when we work in our business," laughed Royer, as he shook hands with the winners and sampled one of the winning quaffs. With work like this, it's not such a difficult task to endure.
