Ford has unveiled an upcoming special edition of its high performance Raptor pickup truck set to hit the dirt late this year. Unfortunately for those hoping for even more off-road capability than the current model offers, it's basically a paint and stickers job.
A step up from the Raptor's existing Luxury Package, the 2014 F-150 Raptor Special Edition features Brick Read leather seat bolsters, some updated interior trim and new graphics for the sides of the bed.
The most notable upgrade is the available Ruby Red paint, the first time the Raptor has been offered in this color since it went on sale for 2010. The Special Edition can also be ordered in Tuxedo Black.
Although there aren't any mechanical upgrades, the Raptor really doesn't need any. Its 411 hp 6.2-liter V8, long travel suspension with FOX racing shocks, Torsen front differential and beadlock wheels already make it just about the most fearsome factory truck currently on sale.
Sales of the Raptor, which can be optioned up to well over $50,000, have been on the upswing in recent months, with the trucks moving out of showrooms at a rate of about 12,000 units per year.
One thing that might make the Special Edition special indeed is that it likely to be the last of this generation of the Raptor before the entire F-150 lineup gets redesigned for the 2015 model year.
