Pumpkin mania spreads to high-proof spirits

We love the fall because it brings seasonal flavors of pumpkin and spice and everything nice.

Pumpkin flavors are popping up everywhere in food and drinks, from in your latte, beer, doughnuts and now in your M&Ms.

So, why not in your hard alcohol?

While there are plenty of other pumpkin-flavored spirits out there (some of our favorites include Milwaukee's Great Lakes Distillery Pumpkin Seasonal Spirit and Corsair Pumpkin Spice Moonshine), there's a new crop of alcohol that can add that special flavor (and of course a serious kick) to your seasonal drinks, anytime.

Sons of Liberty Spirit Company, a Rhode Island distillery, is about to release a new Pumpkin Spice Whiskey that is expected to hit store shelves this week.

According to the company's website, the whiskey is made with "over 2,000 lbs of Rhode Island grown pumpkins," aged in American oak barrels and infused with flavors of clove, allspice, vanilla, cinnamon and sweet orange, creating a "smooth and aromatic pumpkin spice profile." It adds a special kick to warm apple cider and is great in Manhattans, and the company notes that every Sons of Liberty Pumpkin Spice Whiskey begins "as an exclusively brewed craft beer."

Unfortunately, the product is only available in New England.

More widely available is Kahlua's newest product, called Pumpkin Spice. This seasonally-inspired liqueur is an addicting mix of pumpkin and spices and Kahlua's blend of Arabica coffee and sugarcane rum blend.  (Did we mention already that this is addicting?)

"Seasonal pumpkin editions have become a celebrated turning point to ushering in the fall. From flavored coffee drinks and baked goods, to scented candles and even hand lotions, autumn sparks the start of an unavoidable 'pumpkin craze,'" said Michelle Sanders, brand director for Kahlua at Pernod Ricard USA.

For the vodka drinkers out there, Spud Partners, which sells vodka imported from Poland but available in the U.S., has just introduced Sweet Potato Pumpkin Spice Vodka.  The spirit has an ABV of 35 percent and is certified gluten-free.

It follows Pinnacle, which released its own hip and happening pumpkin-flavored vodka last year, called Pumpkin Pie.  The company said it was such a success that it is bringing it back this year, and will join this year's new comer, Pinnacle Peppermint Bark.

Is is cocktail time yet?
