Ford F-150 tops annual Most American Index
Jun 25th 2013, 14:32

Think you were buying American when you picked up that new Ford F-150 pickup?

You're very correct.

For the first time in four years, the best-selling vehicle in the USA also tops Cars.com annual "American Made Index," reclaiming the title from the Toyota Camry.

The list is compiled using a number of factors, including where the cars and the parts used to build them are made and how many are sold. Very strong sales for the F-150 this year pushed it ahead of the Camry, even though its parts content percentage didn't change.

A competing study from American University that uses a slightly different methodology puts the F-150 in third place behind the Dodge Avenger and first place Chevrolet Traverse/GMC Acadia/Buick Enclave triplets.

Unfortunately for shoppers who want to buy as American as possible, the number of candidates for the Cars.com list is dwindling. It only considers those with a domestic parts content of over 75 percent, and just 14 cars qualified this year, down from 20 in 2012 and 30 in 2011, so it's possible that the top 10 list may fall into the single digits in the coming years.

Here's the full list:

1. Ford F-150
2. Toyota Camry
3. Dodge Avenger
4. Honda Odyssey
5. Toyota Sienna
6. Chevrolet Traverse
7. Toyota Tundra
8. GMC Acadia
9. Buick Enclave
10. Toyota Avalon
