If you've just returned from a Labor Day road trip, you may think you've seen some of the worst drivers in the country. But only Allstate's "America's Best Drivers Report" can say for sure whether you're correct.
This is the ninth annual report from Allstate, and it's based on the company's insurance claims data. Allstate ranks America's biggest cities in order of car collision frequency -- that is, how often drivers file claims.
According to Allstate, the safest drivers in the country are found in Fort Collins, Colorado, where a driver's average time between accidents is 13.9 years. Motorists in Fort Collins are 28.2 percent less likely to be involved in collisions than those elsewhere in the U.S.
Other cities in the top five are familiar to Allstate: except for Brownsville, Texas, all landed in the company's top five last year, too. Curiously, most are located in the Midwest:
1. Fort Collins, Colorado (2012 rank: #3)
2. Boise, Idaho (2012 rank: #2)
3. Sioux Falls, South Dakota (2012 rank: #1)
4. Brownsville, Texas (2012 rank: #25)
5. Madison, Wisconsin (2012 rank: #4)
At the very, very bottom of the barrel, we find Washington, D.C., where drivers have accidents about every 4.8 years. That means that motorists in America's capitol city are about 109.3 percent more likely to be involved in collisions than your average U.S. driver.
As with the best cities for driving, most of the cities at the bottom of Allstate's list were there in 2012, too -- and four of the five are situated on the East Coast. Make of that what you will.
190. Glendale, California (2012 rank: #191)
191. Hialeah, Florida (2012 rank: #192)
192. Providence, Rhode Island (2012 rank: #193)
193. Baltimore, Maryland (2012 rank: #194)
194. Washington, D.C. (2012 rank: #195)
For complete details -- including some important information on Allstate's ranking methods (which, among other things, eliminated every city in Massachusetts from its 2013 chart) -- you can view a PDF of the"America's Best Drivers Report" here.
