Your ticket to boutique wine
Dec 18th 2012, 13:30

One of the things that caught my attention on my first trip to Napa was how many smaller vineyards there were. It seemed like everyone was making wine out there.

After meeting some vintners from mom-and-pop or boutique vineyards, it seems that it's easier for them to pay greater attention to the process, to every grape, and you can almost taste their passion for it all.

Wouldn't you love to have a glass of one those wines? Enter the California Wine Club.

Started by Bruce and Pam Boring back in 1990, the club focuses only on these boutique or mom-and-pop wineries from California.

There are about 3,500 wineries in California, and the vast majority are the smaller mom-and-pop's -- smaller vineyards that produce about 5,000 to 15,000 cases wine per year, unlike the big dogs, like Mondavi or Gallo, that make millions of cases per year.

And distribution is tough for the little guy, so much of the wine from the smaller vineyard is sold in the region it is produced. So the California Wine Club is your ticket to the inside.

The club ventures out all over the state, not just in Napa and Sonoma Valleys, though. So club offers wine from great wine-growing regions like Monterey, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz, the Anderson Valley, even the Sierra Foothills--and as far south as Temecula Valley (down near San Diego).

Club members get two bottles a month from a selected vineyard plus a sweet write up on the featured vineyard.

Could make a great gift for a wine lover too. (Hint. Hint.)
