Cadillac is doubling down…on turbos.

The automaker announced today that its upcoming, all-new 2014 CTS will be available with GM's first twin-turbocharged V6 engine, a 420 hp 3.6-liter aimed at competing with similar motors and V8s from other luxury brands.

The high-tech engine features direct fuel injection and will be matched to an eight-speed automatic transmission, another first for GM, and is aimed at delivering a mix of performance and fuel efficiency.

Cadillac predicts that the car have a 25 mpg highway fuel economy rating and will be able to accelerate to 60 mph in about 4.6 seconds. The engine will also be an option in the Cadillac XTS later this year.

The engine is also widely rumored to be making its way into an as-yet unconfirmed V-Series performance version of the Cadillac ATS compact sedan.

While the turbo six-cylinder will only be available on tire-burning rear-wheel-drive CTS models, both an entry level 272 hp turbo four-cylinder and naturally aspirated 321 hp version of the 3.6-liter V6 will be offered with rear or all-wheel-drive when the yet to be revealed car goes on sale this fall.

The 2014 CTS is set to be unveiled in conjunction with the New York Auto Show next week.
