Promise kept.
When Chevrolet unveiled the 2014 Corvette Stingray at the Detroit Auto Show in January, it said its 6.2-liter V8 would put out at least 450 hp and 450 pound-feet of torque when it hits showrooms later this year. Turns out it's an overachiever.
Chevy announced today that the official output for the $51,995 coupe is 455 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque in standard guise. That's up from 430 hp and 424 in the current model, making the seventh generation car the most powerful base Corvette ever offered. But it gets better.
When fitted with an optional sports exhaust option those numbers rise to 460 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque, which should be good for a 0-60 mph sprint of under four seconds.
While it retains a pushrod design, the all-new engine employs the latest direct fuel injection and variable valve timing technologies, along with a cylinder deactivation system that allows it to operate as a V4 under light loads and should help deliver an EPA fuel economy rating of at least 26 mpg highway, according to Chevrolet. But that's not yet official.
Any bets on the number being higher than that?
