Chrysler's Hemi is getting blown to Hell.

Automotive News reports that the automaker's SRT division is hard at work on a new 6.2-liter supercharged version of its venerable V8 under the codename Hellcat.

Insiders say the monster motor could challenge the 640 hp V10 in the SRT Viper for top dog status in Chrysler's piston pantheon.

The highest output V8 the company currently sells is the naturally aspirated 470 hp 6.4-liter found in several models, including the Challenger SRT8 392.

At the 2013 New York Auto Show, SRT CEO Ralph Gilles told FoxNews.com that an extreme version of the Challenger was in the works, but didn't offer specifics on what that might entail.

"We get a lot of requests for the Challenger, not so much the Charger, and we've been looking at doing an ACR [American Club Racing] edition of that, eventually," he said. "So we'll see something along those lines in a couple of years."

According to Automotive News, the new motor is set to debut next summer in the updated 2105 Challenger, where it will do battle with the supercharged engines in the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 and Ford Mustang Shelby GT500.
